Description
2024 Viña Vik Winery A Cabernet Nouveau is a vibrant, early-release red that captures Cabernet Sauvignon in its most youthful, energetic form. Crafted in a “nouveau” style, it’s designed for pure, juicy drinkability rather than long-term cellaring, offering an expressive snapshot of the 2024 vintage in Chile. This playful yet precision-made wine brings together Viña Vik’s high-end pedigree with an approachable, modern take on Cabernet.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, A Cabernet Nouveau 2024 shows a bright, vivid ruby hue with purple highlights that hint at its youth and freshness. The nose is all about immediacy and fruit: think freshly crushed blackberries, red cherries, and currants, lifted by notes of violets, a touch of black pepper, and a subtle herbal edge typical of Cabernet.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, juicy, and upfront, with soft, supple tannins that make it incredibly easy to drink. Crunchy red and black berry fruit dominate, backed by hints of plum skin and a gentle spice note, with vibrant acidity keeping everything lively and refreshing. This is a wine meant to be enjoyed young—ideally within 1–3 years of the vintage—when its primary fruit and exuberant character are at their peak.
Production
Viña Vik is based in Millahue, in Chile’s Cachapoal Valley, an area known for its Mediterranean climate, marked diurnal shifts, and well-drained hillside and valley-floor soils—conditions that suit Cabernet particularly well. Grapes for A Cabernet Nouveau are typically harvested earlier to preserve acidity and bright aromatics, then vinified with a focus on fruit purity rather than extraction. Fermentation is carried out in temperature-controlled vessels to accentuate fresh, primary aromas, with a brief élevage and minimal or no oak influence, allowing the vibrant character of the young Cabernet fruit to take center stage.
Food & Serving
This Cabernet Nouveau is a versatile, food-friendly red that shines with casual, flavorful dishes—think charcuterie, pizza with tomato and mozzarella, grilled sausages, burgers, roasted chicken, or tapas-style small plates. It also works well slightly chilled, making it a great option for warm-weather gatherings and weekend lunches. Serve at around 14–16°C (57–61°F); a light chill will emphasize its freshness. Decanting is not essential, but a quick splash in a carafe or a few minutes in the glass will help the aromatics open up.
Producer
Viña Vik is a cutting-edge winery and luxury wine retreat founded by Norwegian entrepreneur Alexander Vik in the early 2000s, set in the dramatic landscape of Millahue in Chile’s Cachapoal Valley. From the outset, the estate has pursued a “holistic” approach, combining top-level viticulture, architectural innovation, and environmental awareness to craft high-quality wines with a distinct sense of place. Today, Viña Vik is regarded as one of Chile’s most forward-thinking producers, known for its Bordeaux-inspired blends and terroir-driven reds, and for helping to put Millahue and the broader Cachapoal Valley firmly on the map of modern fine wine regions.
