Description
The 2024 Valdesil Sobre Lías Blanco is a pure, expressive Godello from the cool, Atlantic-influenced hills of Valdeorras in northwestern Spain. Crafted to showcase both freshness and texture, it marries crystalline fruit with a subtle, creamy depth from extended aging on the lees. This cuvée helped put Valdeorras Godello on the map, proving the grape can rival some of Europe’s great white wines in complexity and age‑worthiness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Valdesil Sobre Lías Blanco shows a pale straw color with greenish highlights, hinting at its youth and vibrancy. The nose is delicately layered: ripe citrus (lemon zest, tangerine), green apple, and stone fruits are woven together with white flowers, fennel, and a subtle saline, mineral note reminiscent of wet stone.
On the palate, this wine is medium‑bodied yet surprisingly textural, thanks to its time resting on fine lees. Lively acidity frames flavors of citrus, pear, and peach, with a touch of herb and almond cream rounding out the mid‑palate. The finish is long and mineral‑driven, with a mouthwatering, slightly saline snap that invites another sip. While it is seriously enjoyable now in its youthful, fruit‑forward phase, it should develop additional complexity and a more pronounced nuttiness over the next 3–5 years.
Production
Valdesil sources the grapes for Sobre Lías from steep, terraced vineyards in Valdeorras, where Godello thrives on slate and granite soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The Atlantic climate, with cool nights and moderating breezes, preserves acidity and aromatic precision. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then gently pressed to retain purity of fruit. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled stainless steel to emphasize freshness, after which the wine is aged on its fine lees (“sobre lías”) for an extended period, with occasional bâtonnage to build texture and complexity without resorting to heavy oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Godello is a superb partner for seafood—think shellfish, grilled octopus, oysters, or simply prepared white fish—as well as sushi, ceviche, and lightly spiced Asian dishes. It also pairs beautifully with soft cheeses, vegetable tapas, and poultry in lemon or herb-based sauces. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow its aromatics and texture to fully emerge. Decanting is not necessary, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving can help the wine open up in the glass.
Producer
Valdesil is one of the benchmark producers of Valdeorras and a key name in the modern revival of Godello. The estate’s origins trace back to the late 19th century, when some of the region’s oldest Godello vineyards were planted on slate terraces that Valdesil still farms today. Through meticulous vineyard work and a focus on expressing terroir rather than heavy winemaking influence, Valdesil has helped elevate Valdeorras from an under‑the‑radar appellation to a sought‑after source of distinctive, mineral‑driven whites. Their Sobre Lías bottling is widely recognized as a reference point for age‑worthy, serious Godello from Spain.
