Description

The 2024 Sadie Family Pofadder is one of South Africa’s benchmark expressions of Cinsault, crafted by Eben Sadie in the heart of the Swartland. Named after the Afrikaans word for puff adder (a local snake), this wine is all about coiled energy, purity, and understated power. Drawn from old, dry-farmed bush vines, it showcases how refined and terroir-driven Cinsault can be when handled with absolute precision.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pofadder typically shows a pale to medium ruby hue, more akin to a serious cru Beaujolais or a light Burgundy than a stereotypically dense South African red. On the nose, expect lifted aromas of wild red cherries, cranberry, and pomegranate, layered with rose petals, dried herbs, rooibos, and a hint of spice and earth from the granitic soils. There’s a delicate floral top note and a sense of coolness and restraint that immediately sets it apart. The palate is wonderfully fine-boned yet intense: bright, red-fruited and silky, with vibrant acidity and ultra-fine, chalky tannins. Flavours of sour cherry, red currant, blood orange and subtle raspberry are joined by savoury nuances of dried thyme, tea leaf and a faint, stony minerality. Alcohol is typically moderate, emphasizing freshness over weight. Young, it can show a touch of natural tension that promises development over time. While it drinks beautifully within a few years of release, top vintages of Pofadder can age gracefully for 8–12+ years, gaining complexity, savouriness and a more seamless texture.

Production
Pofadder is sourced from old, dry-farmed bush vines of Cinsault rooted in decomposed granite and slate soils on the slopes of the Kasteelberg in the Swartland. The region’s warm, dry climate is moderated by afternoon breezes, while the poor, rocky soils limit vigour and concentrate flavour, yielding small berries with intense, nuanced character. Harvest is done entirely by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard to retain only pristine fruit. In the cellar, Sadie Family typically employs whole-bunch or high-percentage whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts, favouring gentle extraction through infusion rather than heavy punching down. The wine is then aged in neutral, large-format oak or concrete to preserve purity and terroir expression, bottled with minimal intervention and often only a light filtration, resulting in a wine of remarkable finesse and authenticity.

Food & Serving
This elegant, medium-bodied Cinsault is extremely versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with roast chicken, duck, pork loin, charcuterie, game birds, grilled lamb chops, and dishes featuring Mediterranean herbs and olive oil. It’s equally at home with earthy vegetarian fare such as mushroom risotto, roasted root vegetables, lentil dishes, and charred aubergine. Serve slightly cool, around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to highlight its freshness and aromatics. A gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help young bottles open up, but aggressive aeration is unnecessary; this is a wine best appreciated for its precision and delicacy rather than sheer power.

Producer
Sadie Family Wines, founded by Eben Sadie in the late 1990s, is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most influential and visionary producers. Based in the Swartland, the estate helped spearhead the region’s modern renaissance, shifting the focus toward dry-farmed, old-vine parcels and terroir-driven, minimal-intervention winemaking. Eben’s work with the Old Vine Project and his signature wines—such as the Columella, Palladius, and the Old Vine Series including Pofadder—has put Swartland firmly on the world map of fine wine. Consistently lauded by international critics, Sadie Family is celebrated for its meticulous vineyard work, sensitive cellar practices, and unwavering commitment to expressing South Africa’s heritage vineyards with clarity and grace.
