Description
The 2024 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Magnum is a benchmark Mosel Riesling from one of Germany’s most revered estates, presented in the ideal format for long-term aging and generous sharing. Sourced from the famed Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard, this Spätlese marries crystalline precision with expressive fruit and filigree sweetness. In magnum, its evolution will be even more graceful, making it a superb choice for cellaring or special occasions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale lemon color with green highlights, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose is intensely aromatic yet refined, offering layers of white peach, ripe pear, green apple, and Meyer lemon, intertwined with floral notes of white blossom and jasmine, plus the classic Mosel slate minerality and a faint whisper of smoke.
On the palate, this Spätlese is light to medium-bodied but wonderfully concentrated, with juicy stone fruit, citrus zest, and a touch of honeyed sweetness perfectly counterbalanced by racy, mouthwatering acidity. The texture is silky and elegant, with a long, precise finish marked by wet stone, citrus peel, and delicate herbal nuances. In magnum, the 2024 is built for longevity: it will be delicious in its youthful, vibrant phase but has the structure to develop beautifully over 15–25+ years, gaining complexity in the form of dried fruit, spice, and the classic petrol nuances of mature Riesling.
Production
Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the Mosel’s most iconic steep-slope vineyards, with blue Devonian slate soils, excellent drainage, and a south to southwest exposure that maximizes sunlight while the nearby Mosel River moderates temperatures. The old, low-yielding Riesling vines are typically harvested by hand in multiple passes (selective picking) to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes at Spätlese ripeness levels. At Joh. Jos. Prüm, vinification is deliberately traditional and low-intervention: the grapes are gently pressed, the must is clarified by settling, and fermentation proceeds slowly—often with indigenous yeasts—in cool stainless steel or old large oak fuders. Fermentation is arrested naturally to retain a fine-tuned level of residual sugar, preserving vibrant fruit and balancing the high natural acidity, followed by maturation on fine lees before bottling to enhance texture and aromatic detail.
Food & Serving
This 2024 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Magnum is exceptionally versatile at the table. Its balance of sweetness and acidity makes it a superb match for spicy Asian cuisine (Thai, Vietnamese, Szechuan), dishes with aromatic herbs and ginger, or lightly spiced curries. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring shellfish and crustaceans, such as scallops, prawns, and lobster, as well as pork tenderloin, poultry with fruit-based sauces, and soft cheeses like young goat cheese or mild blue cheeses. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). Young bottles do not strictly require decanting, but a short aeration (or opening 30–60 minutes in advance) can help the aromas unfurl; as the wine matures, decanting for 30 minutes can help separate any sediment and open up more complex tertiary notes.
Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most celebrated and influential estates in the Mosel, renowned worldwide for its ethereal, long-lived Rieslings. Founded in 1911, the estate is based in Wehlen and has become synonymous with some of the region’s greatest vineyard sites, including Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich. Prüm’s style is defined by low yields, late harvesting, meticulous selection, and a commitment to preserving finesse, purity, and age-worthiness in every wine. Frequently cited in reference works and collector circles as a benchmark for German Riesling, Joh. Jos. Prüm has helped shape the global reputation of the Mosel and continues to set the standard for finely balanced, delicately sweet Rieslings with remarkable longevity.
