Description

The 2024 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel is a benchmark Mosel Riesling from one of Germany’s most revered estates. Sourced from the famed Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard and bottled under the coveted Goldkapsel designation, this is a richly concentrated, late-harvest wine crafted for both immediate pleasure and long-term cellaring. It represents the pinnacle of Prüm’s delicate, filigreed style: intensely sweet yet incredibly refined and precise.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Auslese Goldkapsel typically shows a radiant, pale gold color that deepens with time in bottle, hinting at its richness and botrytis influence. The nose is expressive and layered: expect aromas of ripe yellow peach, apricot compote, candied citrus peel, and juicy pineapple, wrapped in notes of white blossom, honeycomb, and a subtle smoky, slate-driven minerality that is classic Mosel. On the palate, the 2024 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Goldkapsel should be lush and opulent but never heavy, with a silken texture balanced by electric acidity. Flavors of stone fruit, passion fruit, and Meyer lemon curd mingle with hints of saffron, ginger, and wet slate, building in intensity through a long, shimmering finish. The interplay of sweetness and acidity promises outstanding aging potential: while already charming in youth for its purity of fruit, this wine will evolve beautifully over two to three decades or more, gaining complexity, depth, and a more honeyed, savory nuance over time.

Production
Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the Mosel’s most iconic steep-slope vineyards, with blue Devonian slate soils that give Riesling its hallmark tension, minerality, and precision. The vines cling to vertiginous slopes overlooking the Mosel River, benefitting from reflected light and warmth that help achieve perfect ripeness in this cool-climate region. At Joh. Jos. Prüm, harvesting is done by hand in multiple, meticulous passes (selective picking), allowing the team to choose perfectly ripe and often botrytis-affected grapes for the Auslese Goldkapsel. Fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel or traditional large, old oak casks with indigenous yeasts, at cool temperatures, to preserve aromatics and finesse. The wine is then matured on fine lees, with minimal intervention, to maintain purity, precision, and the estate’s signature elegance.

Food & Serving
This Auslese Goldkapsel shines with rich, delicately spiced cuisine and refined desserts. It pairs beautifully with foie gras, terrines, blue cheeses such as Roquefort or Stilton, and Asian dishes featuring aromatic spices, gentle heat, or umami-rich sauces (think Thai or Vietnamese with chili, ginger, and lime). For dessert, serve it alongside fruit tarts, lemon or passion fruit desserts, or a simple plate of ripe stone fruit. For optimal enjoyment, serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). Decanting is not strictly necessary, but opening the bottle 30–60 minutes in advance or pouring into larger white wine glasses will help the aromatics unfold, especially as the wine gains a few years of bottle age.

Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most esteemed producers in the Mosel and a global reference point for top-quality Riesling. Founded in the early 20th century in Wehlen, the estate quickly became synonymous with precision-crafted, long-lived wines from some of the region’s finest vineyards, most notably Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich. Over the decades, the Prüm family has gained a reputation for meticulous vineyard work, late harvesting, and an unwavering commitment to creating wines that combine intensity with remarkable lightness. Their bottlings are regularly cited among the greatest white wines in the world and are prized by collectors for their extraordinary capacity to age gracefully and evolve in complexity.
