Description

The 2024 Günther Steinmetz Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett captures the crystalline precision and airy charm that have made Mosel Rieslings so beloved. Sourced from one of the Mosel’s most iconic steep-slope vineyards, this Kabinett balances ripe fruit, electric acidity and feather-light alcohol in a remarkably drinkable style. It’s a wine made for both immediate pleasure and patient cellaring, expressing the purity of Riesling and the finesse of a great site in a cool, classical vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Kabinett shows a pale lemon color with green reflections, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose is vibrant and detailed, with aromas of white peach, green apple, Meyer lemon and lime zest layered over notes of white flowers, crushed slate, and a subtle whisper of herbal spice. On the palate, it is delicately off-dry yet racy, with a fine interplay between gentle sweetness and an intense, mouthwatering acidity. Juicy stone fruit, citrus and crunchy orchard fruit are carried on a filigreed frame, with a salty, slate-driven minerality stretching the wine out to a long, precise finish. Light in alcohol but not in flavor, it shows superb balance and energy. Enjoyable now for its youthful brightness, it has the structure to evolve gracefully over 8–15 years, gaining complexity, honeyed nuances and more pronounced mineral depth with time in bottle.

Production
Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the Mosel’s great south to southwest-facing, steep slate vineyards, known for producing intensely fine, aromatic Rieslings with striking minerality and elegance. The vines for this Kabinett grow on very poor, weathered blue and grey slate soils that force deep root systems and naturally low yields, concentrating flavor while preserving acidity. Grapes are typically hand-harvested from the steep terraces in multiple passes (selective picking) to ensure optimal ripeness and pristine fruit. In the cellar, Günther Steinmetz favors a gentle, low-intervention approach: careful pressing of whole clusters, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and cool, slow vinification in stainless steel and/or large old wooden casks. The wine rests on its fine lees before bottling, enhancing texture and complexity while keeping the style transparent, vibrant and true to its site.

Food & Serving
This Kabinett’s delicate sweetness and incisive acidity make it extremely versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with lightly spiced Asian cuisine (think Thai salads, sushi, sashimi, or Vietnamese dishes with fresh herbs), aromatic dishes with ginger or lemongrass, and classic German fare such as smoked trout, schnitzel with lemon, or soft pretzels and fresh cheeses. It is also superb with goat cheese, young bloomy-rind cheeses, ceviche, and lightly cured salmon, and can be a charming partner to fruit tarts or desserts that aren’t overly sweet. Serve well-chilled at around 7–9°C; a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe can help the aromas open, but extended decanting is not necessary. Best enjoyed in a white wine or Riesling glass that emphasizes its delicate aromatics and minerality.

Producer
Weingut Günther Steinmetz is a highly regarded family estate based in Brauneberg in the Mosel Valley, with a history that stretches back to the 19th century. Under the leadership of Stefan Steinmetz, the winery has become one of the most exciting names in the region, known for its meticulous work in steep, slate-rich vineyards and its commitment to expressing individual sites with clarity and authenticity. Farming is largely organic and low-intervention, with a focus on old vines, low yields and handwork on the dramatic slopes that define the Mosel landscape. In the cellar, Steinmetz embraces traditional methods—spontaneous fermentations, sensitive use of large old casks and minimal manipulation—resulting in Rieslings that are both intensely mineral and wonderfully transparent to terroir. The estate’s wines, from dry to nobly sweet styles, have earned consistent critical acclaim and a reputation among enthusiasts for offering character, precision and outstanding value within one of Germany’s benchmark regions.
