Description
The 2023 Günther Steinmetz Riesling Piesporter Treppchen V.d.T. showcases the energy and purity of steep-slope Mosel Riesling in a vibrant, utterly drinkable style. Sourced from the famed Piesporter Treppchen vineyard, this cuvée offers serious terroir character with a wonderfully approachable profile and sharp value. Classified as a simple table wine (V.d.T.), it quietly overdelivers, giving you authentic old-vine Mosel character without the grand cru price tag.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is a pale lemon with green highlights, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is immediately expressive: ripe green apple, lime zest and white peach mingle with crushed slate, wet stone, and a whisper of white flowers and lemon balm. There’s a citrusy lift and a distinct mineral edge that is very much Piesporter Treppchen.
On the palate, it is light to medium-bodied, racy, and precise, driven by finely etched acidity. Flavors of juicy lime, green apple, grapefruit pith, and underripe nectarine are layered over a salty, stony backbone, with a touch of herbal nuance and subtle lees creaminess rounding out the edges. The finish is long, crisp, and mouthwatering, leaving a lingering impression of citrus and slate. This is a Riesling meant to be enjoyed on the fresher side, drinking beautifully now and over the next 3–5 years, gaining a bit more texture and savory complexity with short-term cellaring.
Production
Piesporter Treppchen is one of the Mosel’s classic steep slate vineyards, with south to southwest exposures that capture maximum sunlight and produce intensely mineral, finely etched Rieslings. Günther Steinmetz works these dramatic slopes largely by hand, as machinery is all but impossible on such gradients, ensuring careful selection of healthy, ripe grapes at harvest. Fermentation is traditionally carried out with ambient yeasts in stainless steel and/or large neutral foudres, at controlled temperatures to preserve aromatics and precision. Elevage is typically on fine lees for added texture and complexity, with minimal intervention and low sulfur, resulting in a wine that clearly reflects its slate-rich terroir and the vintage’s natural energy.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is a superb partner for a wide range of dishes, especially those that benefit from bright acidity and a mineral backbone. Think fresh oysters, ceviche, sushi, lightly spiced Asian dishes, smoked trout, green salads with citrus vinaigrette, goat’s cheese, and herb-roasted chicken or pork. Serve well chilled at about 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its precision and freshness. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but a short time in the glass or a brief splash-decant can help the aromatics open up and show more stone-fruit and floral complexity.
Producer
Weingut Günther Steinmetz is a highly respected Mosel estate based in Brauneberg, known among insiders for its meticulous work on steep-slope vineyards and its quietly brilliant, terroir-driven Rieslings. Founded in the 20th century and now led by winemaker Stefan Steinmetz, the estate has earned a strong reputation for authentic, often uncompromising expressions of classic Mosel sites such as Piesporter Treppchen and Brauneberger Juffer. Working largely with old vines on slate soils, Steinmetz favors low yields, careful handwork in the vineyards, and minimal-intervention cellar practices, resulting in wines that are vibrant, detailed, and deeply rooted in their origin. Over the last decade, the estate has become a reference point for characterful, artisanal Mosel Riesling.
