Description
The 2023 Günther Steinmetz Riesling Mosel Neumagener Rosengärtchen Grosses Gewächs is a razor-sharp, terroir-driven dry Riesling from one of the Mosel’s most exciting estates. Sourced from a top single vineyard, this Grosses Gewächs (GG) captures the slatey precision and filigreed elegance that have made Mosel Riesling legendary. It’s a wine crafted for enthusiasts who appreciate purity, detail, and depth over sheer power. As a Grosses Gewächs, this bottling represents the top dry expression of the Neumagener Rosengärtchen vineyard, where old vines, steep slopes, and low yields converge to produce remarkable concentration. Günther Steinmetz has gained a reputation for minimal-intervention winemaking and meticulous work in the vineyard, reviving once-overlooked sites and turning them into reference points for the region’s new generation of quality-focused growers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with green highlights, reflecting its youth and freshness. Swirl the glass and you’ll notice a fine, persistent shimmer, hinting at both extract and lively acidity.
On the nose, expect a focused and expressive bouquet: green apple, lime zest, white peach, and crunchy pear layered over classic Mosel signatures of wet slate, flint, and a whisper of smoky reduction. Subtle floral tones—white blossom and chamomile—emerge with air, along with hints of fresh herbs and citrus oil.
The palate is precise, dry, and finely etched, with a taut core of citrus and orchard fruit supported by vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. Notes of lime, grapefruit pith, and stone fruit are wrapped around a saline, mineral spine that runs cleanly through the finish. The texture is both crystalline and subtly creamy from lees contact, giving the wine a remarkable combination of tension and finesse. The finish is long, stony, and persistent, leaving impressions of crushed rock, citrus zest, and faint herbal spice.
This 2023 Rosengärtchen GG is built for aging. While already compelling in its youthful, energetic phase, it will gain complexity and harmony over 8–15 years, developing nuances of honey, dried citrus, smoke, and petrol while retaining its structure and minerality.
Production
Neumagener Rosengärtchen is a steep, slate-rich vineyard on the Mosel, with excellent exposure that allows Riesling to ripen slowly and fully while preserving piercing acidity. The soils are dominated by weathered slate with pockets of fine earth, giving the wines their distinctive, smoky mineral character and filigreed structure. Vines are largely worked by hand due to the incline of the slopes, and yields are kept low to maximize concentration and site expression. Harvest is done manually, often in multiple passes, to select only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, Günther Steinmetz follows a low-intervention philosophy: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and extended time on the lees in stainless steel and/or large traditional barrels. Minimal fining and filtration ensure that the final wine truly reflects the character of Rosengärtchen and the vintage.
Food & Serving
This dry, mineral-driven Riesling pairs beautifully with refined yet flavorful dishes that complement its precision and acidity. Think shellfish (oysters, scallops, crab), grilled or pan-seared white fish, sashimi and crudo, or delicate ceviche. It is also excellent with poultry in light, citrus or herb-based sauces, veal schnitzel, and vegetable-focused cuisine—especially asparagus, fennel, or dishes featuring fresh herbs and a touch of cream. Asian-inspired dishes with ginger, lemongrass, and moderate spice can be superb matches as well.
Serve at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and structural finesse. For maximum expression, open the bottle 30–60 minutes before serving; a brief decant for young vintages can help the wine unfurl its more subtle mineral and floral nuances.
