Description

The 2023 Günther Steinmetz Riesling Mosel Neumagener Rosengärtchen *Am Fels* is a finely etched, terroir-driven white wine from one of the Mosel’s most characterful growers. Sourced from a steep, rocky site above the village of Neumagen, this Riesling offers a taut, mineral backbone wrapped in vibrant, pure fruit. It’s a wine that captures the delicacy and precision that have made Mosel Riesling a benchmark for white wine lovers around the world.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling typically shows a pale lemon to light straw hue with greenish reflections, signaling its youth and freshness. The nose is focused and detailed, with bright aromas of lime zest, green apple and white peach layered over wet slate, crushed rock, and subtle herbal notes—think lemon balm and a hint of white flowers. On the palate, expect a racy, linear profile with vivid acidity and a finely chiseled texture. Citrus and orchard fruits are framed by a pronounced stony minerality, giving the wine a salty, mouthwatering finish that lingers. The balance between fruit, acidity, and residual sugar (if present) is typically precise in this style, making it both refreshing now and capable of developing added complexity over 5–8 years, gaining more honeyed, smoky and petrol nuances with bottle age.

Production
The Neumagener Rosengärtchen “Am Fels” is a steep, stony Mosel vineyard where vines dig into poor, rocky soils rich in slate and stone—conditions that naturally limit yields and enhance concentration. The cool Mosel climate, combined with the vineyard’s slopes and exposure, allows for a long, slow ripening period, preserving acidity and aromatic finesse. Grapes are generally hand-harvested on such terrain, with careful selection of healthy, optimally ripe bunches. At Günther Steinmetz, vinification traditionally emphasizes minimal intervention: gentle pressing, fermentation in stainless steel or neutral large oak, often with ambient yeasts, and extended time on fine lees to build texture while preserving the clarity and precision of the Riesling fruit and the vineyard’s mineral character.

Food & Serving
This Mosel Riesling is a versatile food partner, especially with dishes that appreciate bright acidity and a clean, mineral edge. Try it with seafood such as grilled prawns, steamed mussels, sushi and sashimi, or delicate white fish with citrus and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with light poultry dishes, fresh goats’ cheese, Asian-inspired cuisine with ginger and lemongrass, and mildly spicy Thai or Vietnamese dishes. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). A brief 15–20 minutes in the glass or a small carafe is usually enough to let the aromas open up; extended decanting is not necessary but can be beneficial in the first year or two after release.

Producer
Weingut Günther Steinmetz is a highly regarded family estate based in Brauneberg in the heart of the Mosel, known among insiders for its authentic, terroir-focused Rieslings. Over the years, the estate has built a reputation for working some of the region’s steep, challenging vineyards with meticulous care, often relying on traditional, low-intervention methods to let each site speak clearly. Their wines—from village bottlings to single-vineyard parcels like Neumagener Rosengärtchen—are celebrated for their precision, energy, and pronounced sense of place, contributing to the Mosel’s standing as one of the world’s great regions for age-worthy Riesling.
