Description
The 2024 Günther Steinmetz Dhroner Hofberger Riesling Reserve is a tightly focused, terroir-driven Mosel Riesling from one of the region’s most dramatic slate slopes. Sourced from select parcels in the steep Dhroner Hofberger vineyard, this Reserve bottling captures both the crystalline precision and depth that have made Steinmetz a favorite among serious Riesling collectors. It’s a wine that balances youthful energy with the structure and concentration for long-term cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Dhroner Hofberger Riesling Reserve shows a pale, luminous straw color with green reflections, hinting at its youthful intensity. The nose opens with layered aromas of white peach, lime zest, green apple skin, and crushed slate, wrapped in notes of white flowers and a subtle smoky, herbal lift. There’s a distinct mineral edge that immediately points to steep Mosel slate.
On the palate, the wine is incisive and precise, with a tension between mouthwatering acidity and concentrated, stone-fruited ripeness. Flavors of lime, grapefruit, ripe pear, and nectarine are interwoven with saline minerality and a faint, savory spice note, giving the wine real complexity and length. The finish is long, clean, and finely etched, with a lingering impression of wet stone and citrus oil. While already expressive in its youth, this Reserve clearly has the structure to evolve beautifully over the next 8–15 years, developing more honeyed, smoky, and herbal nuances with time in the cellar.
Production
Dhroner Hofberger is a classic Mosel steep-slope vineyard, composed largely of weathered blue and grey slate with excellent drainage and a south to south-west exposure that maximizes ripening while preserving acidity. The vines for this Reserve bottling are predominantly older, low-yielding parcels, painstakingly tended and harvested by hand due to the extreme incline of the site. In the cellar, Günther Steinmetz follows a low-intervention philosophy: gently pressing whole clusters, allowing spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and maturing the wine on fine lees in stainless steel and/or traditional Mosel fuder to build texture without masking the vineyard character. Sulfur is used sparingly, and the focus remains on purity, transparency, and expressing the slate-driven terroir of Dhron.
Food & Serving
This Riesling Reserve is highly versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with refined seafood dishes such as scallops, poached turbot, and grilled prawns, as well as freshwater fish like trout with herbs. It also shines alongside lightly spiced Asian cuisine, sushi and sashimi, delicate pork dishes, and aged goat or alpine cheeses where its acidity cuts through richness. Serve at 9–11°C (48–52°F) for optimal balance of freshness and aromatic complexity. Young bottles will benefit from a brief 30–60 minute decant to let the wine open up and reveal its full range of mineral and citrus notes, while older vintages can be served directly from the bottle with careful handling.
