Description
The 2024 Alois Lageder Alto Adige Chardonnay is a vibrant, mountain-grown white that captures the precision and clarity of Northern Italy’s coolest slopes. Crafted from Chardonnay grown in carefully selected vineyards across Alto Adige, it marries purity of fruit with a refined, mineral backbone. This bottling showcases Alois Lageder’s hallmark style: elegant, refreshingly dry, and deeply expressive of its alpine origins.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chardonnay shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with glints of green, hinting at its youthful freshness. The nose is clean and lifted, offering aromas of green apple, pear, white peach, and lemon zest, layered with delicate floral notes, a touch of fresh almonds, and a subtle stony minerality.
On the palate, it is crisp, medium‑bodied and finely balanced, with lively acidity that keeps the wine focused and mouthwatering. Expect flavors of crunchy orchard fruit, citrus, and a hint of tropical nuances, wrapped around a core of mineral-driven tension. The texture is sleek rather than creamy, with just enough roundness to soften the edges without losing precision. This 2024 vintage is best enjoyed in its youth for its brightness and energy, but it can comfortably evolve over 3–5 years, gaining a bit more nuance and complexity.
Production
Sourced from high-altitude vineyards in Alto Adige, this Chardonnay benefits from significant diurnal temperature swings, abundant sunshine, and well-draining, predominantly gravelly and calcareous soils—conditions that promote slow, even ripening and great aromatic definition. Alois Lageder is renowned for biodynamic and sustainable farming, so grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, fermentation largely takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve fresh fruit character, with possible partial aging on fine lees and limited use of neutral oak for texture rather than overt wood influence. The result is a clean, terroir-driven Chardonnay that emphasizes clarity, finesse, and drinkability.
Food & Serving
This Alto Adige Chardonnay is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with grilled or poached fish, shellfish, sushi, light pasta dishes, risotto with spring vegetables, roast chicken, and soft-rind cheeses. It also works well alongside Mediterranean salads, fresh goat cheese, and simply prepared seasonal vegetables. Serve well-chilled, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to highlight its crispness and aromatics. Decanting is not necessary, but pouring the wine into glasses a few minutes before serving will allow the aromatics to open up nicely.
Producer
Alois Lageder is one of Alto Adige’s benchmark producers, known for combining a long family tradition with a forward-thinking, quality-driven philosophy. Based in Magrè, the Lageder family has been making wine in the region for generations and is widely regarded as a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture and sustainable practices in Northern Italy. Their wines are prized for their precision, elegance, and clear expression of site, helping to elevate Alto Adige’s international reputation for high-quality, cool-climate wines. Over the years, Alois Lageder has received consistent critical acclaim for both their classic varieties and innovative cuvées, reinforcing their status as a reference point for the region.
