Description
The 2023 Tenuta di Biserno Insoglio del Cinghiale Balthazar (12L) is a bold, modern Tuscan red bottled in an impressive large format – perfect for collectors, celebrations, or extended cellaring. Crafted by the renowned Tenuta di Biserno estate in coastal Tuscany, this wine showcases the region’s Mediterranean elegance with a distinctly contemporary, Bordeaux-inspired edge. In the grand 12-liter Balthazar, the wine evolves more slowly and gracefully, offering a rare opportunity to experience Insoglio del Cinghiale at its most refined and expressive over time.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Insoglio del Cinghiale presents a deep, vibrant ruby color with youthful purple highlights at the rim, reflecting its energy and freshness. The nose is immediately inviting: ripe blackberries and dark cherries layered with notes of plum, wild herbs, and a touch of Mediterranean scrub. Subtle spice tones—black pepper, clove, and a hint of cocoa—sit over fine graphite and cedar, giving complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
On the palate, this is a supple yet structured Tuscan red, typically led by Syrah with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot adding depth and polish. The attack is juicy and medium to full-bodied, with dark berry fruit, black cherry and plum framed by silky, well-integrated tannins. Savory undertones of tobacco leaf, dried herbs and a light mineral edge bring a sense of place, while fresh acidity keeps everything lifted and food-friendly. In a Balthazar format, the slower oxygen exchange enhances its aging potential: expect the wine to gain in complexity and tertiary notes—leather, truffle, and forest floor—over 10–15 years, perhaps longer under proper cellaring.
Production
Tenuta di Biserno lies near Bibbona on the Tuscan coast, just north of Bolgheri, where maritime breezes, abundant sunshine and a mix of clay, sand and gravel soils create ideal conditions for Bordeaux varieties and Syrah. Grapes for Insoglio del Cinghiale are typically harvested by hand to ensure precise selection and optimal ripeness, often parcel by parcel to preserve the character of each vineyard block. In the cellar, fermentation usually takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to safeguard purity of fruit and aromatic freshness, followed by a period of maturation—often in French oak barriques and larger vessels—to sculpt the tannins and add gentle spice without masking the wine’s coastal Tuscan identity. The final blend is assembled with an emphasis on balance, drinkability, and elegance, then bottled in both standard and large formats, with the 12-liter Balthazar being one of the rarest and most impressive expressions.
Food & Serving
This 2023 Insoglio del Cinghiale Balthazar is a natural match for rich, savory dishes and festive gatherings. Pair it with grilled or roasted red meats, Tuscan-style steaks, lamb chops, game dishes, hearty ragù, wild boar, and aged or semi-aged cheeses such as pecorino and Parmigiano Reggiano. It also complements richer pasta dishes with mushrooms or truffle and slow-cooked stews. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for optimal expression. Given the large format, plan on a generous lead time for the wine to open: decant 1.5–3 hours before serving in wide-bowled glasses to let the aromatics fully unfurl and the texture soften beautifully.
Producer
Tenuta di Biserno is the brainchild of Lodovico Antinori, one of the key figures behind the Super Tuscan movement, and is located in the coastal hills of Bibbona, adjacent to the famed Bolgheri appellation. Established to explore the potential of Bordeaux varieties and Syrah in this unique maritime terroir, the estate has quickly gained a reputation for crafting refined, characterful reds that combine Tuscan soul with international polish. Biserno’s wines—ranging from the approachable Insoglio del Cinghiale to the more structured flagship labels—are highly regarded by critics and collectors alike, reinforcing the estate’s status as one of the most exciting modern properties in coastal Tuscany. The Insoglio del Cinghiale, in particular, has become a benchmark for accessible yet serious Tuscan blends, and in large formats like this Balthazar, it offers both spectacle and genuine cellar-worthy substance.
