Description
The 2023 St. Michael-Eppan Sanct Valentin Chardonnay is one of South Tyrol’s most respected white wines, combining alpine freshness with generous depth and finesse. From one of Italy’s most admired cooperative estates, it stands out for its precision, elegance, and the distinctive quality that has made the Sanct Valentin name a benchmark for the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a bright straw-yellow color with a polished, inviting sheen. The nose is refined and layered, often offering ripe yellow fruit, citrus, delicate floral notes, and subtle hints of spice, vanilla, or toasted nuances from careful oak aging.
On the palate, it is creamy yet focused, with a vibrant line of acidity that keeps the wine fresh and balanced. Expect a harmonious mix of orchard fruit, minerality, and gentle complexity, finishing long and precise. While already expressive in youth, it has the structure and pedigree to develop beautifully over several years.
Production
St. Michael-Eppan draws on vineyards in the cool, elevated areas of South Tyrol, where the alpine climate, strong day-night temperature shifts, and mineral-rich soils help preserve acidity and aromatic clarity. The grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with vinification aimed at preserving purity while adding complexity through controlled fermentation and ageing, often including time in oak.
Food & Serving
This Chardonnay is an excellent match for richer fish dishes, shellfish, roast poultry, creamy risottos, and refined vegetarian cuisine such as asparagus or mushroom dishes. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a short period in the glass can help the wine open fully.
Producer
St. Michael-Eppan is one of South Tyrol’s leading wine cooperatives, founded in 1907 and widely recognized for its high standards and strong regional identity. The estate has built a reputation for producing wines of precision and consistency, and the Sanct Valentin range is considered its flagship collection, showcasing some of the finest vineyard sites and most ambitious winemaking in the area.
