Description
The 2023 Schäfer-Fröhlich Frühlingsplätzchen Riesling Grosses Gewächs is a precision-crafted dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most celebrated crus. This is a wine that marries crystalline minerality with vibrant fruit, capturing the steep, red-slate slopes of Frühlingsplätzchen in the glass. As a Grosses Gewächs (Germany’s top classification for dry wines), it offers serious structure, depth and age-worthiness for discerning Riesling lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Frühlingsplätzchen GG shows a pale lemon hue with green highlights, hinting at its youth and tension. The nose is intensely aromatic yet refined, with notes of white peach, lime zest, blood orange, fresh herbs and white flowers, underpinned by a distinct crushed-slate and wet-stone minerality. Subtle hints of grapefruit, green apple, and a whisper of smoky reduction add complexity as it opens.
On the palate, this is focused, dry and razor-sharp, with racy acidity and a sleek, linear profile. Citrus and stone fruits are layered over saline, stony nuances, with a fine, almost chalky texture and a long, vibrating finish that lingers with grapefruit pith, herbs and mineral spice. The structure and intensity suggest excellent aging potential; while already thrilling in its youth after a bit of air, it will gain further complexity and polish over 8–15 years in the cellar, developing more nuanced honeyed, herbal and smoky tones with time.
Production
Frühlingsplätzchen is one of the Nahe’s most distinctive vineyards, known for its steep slopes, cool exposition and red slate soils with quartz and sandstone elements that contribute to the wine’s aromatic lift and fine-boned minerality. Schäfer-Fröhlich works with low yields and meticulous, largely hand harvesting, ensuring only perfectly ripe, healthy Riesling grapes are selected, often over multiple passes through the vineyard. In the cellar, the Grosses Gewächs is traditionally vinified with a gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and extended lees contact in stainless steel and/or large neutral barrels, resulting in a dry wine that is both intensely terroir-driven and texturally refined.
Food & Serving
This Riesling Grosses Gewächs is superb with refined, ingredient-focused cuisine: think sashimi and high-quality sushi, ceviche, oysters, and other delicate shellfish, as well as lightly grilled or poached white fish, scallops, and crab. It also shines alongside fine vegetable dishes, asparagus, citrus-accented salads, and subtly spiced Asian cuisine (especially Japanese and modern Thai), and pairs beautifully with goat cheese or young, bloomy-rind cheeses. Serve at 8–10°C for maximum precision and aromatic clarity. Young bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter or from being opened in advance, allowing the wine to unfold its full aromatic spectrum and soften its youthful tension.
