Description
2023 Sadie Family Treinspoor is a highly characterful red wine from Swartland that showcases just how profound Tinta Barocca can be in the right hands. Crafted in small quantities by Eben Sadie, one of South Africa’s most influential winemakers, it captures both the ruggedness and refinement of old-vine Swartland fruit. This cuvée has become a cult reference, valued not only for its rarity but also for its remarkable aging potential and its stylistic nod to great Piedmontese reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Treinspoor shows a clear, luminous ruby-red hue, more translucent than many modern reds, immediately signalling finesse over power. The nose is initially restrained before slowly unfolding into a complex, layered bouquet: wild raspberries, cranberry leaf and red cherry skin are interwoven with notes of tobacco, wet clay, and a distinct earthy minerality. Delicate waves of spice—clove, nutmeg and a touch of cracked black pepper—add lift and intrigue.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet firm, with a taut, linear structure. Bright, precise acidity carries pure red fruit flavours and savoury undertones, while the tannins are fine but assertive, reminiscent of Barolo or Barbaresco in their grip and ageworthiness rather than sheer weight. The finish is long, dry and spicy, with a lingering impression of red berries, earth and subtle herbal notes. This vintage is built to evolve: while already captivating, it will reward patience, with an aging potential comfortably extending 10–15 years or more under good cellar conditions as the tannins resolve and the aromatics gain further complexity.
Production
Treinspoor is sourced from carefully tended Tinta Barocca vines in Swartland, an inland region defined by old, often dry-farmed vineyards rooted in decomposed granite and shale. The warm, wind-swept climate is tempered by cool evenings, allowing the grapes to ripen fully while retaining vital acidity and a distinct mineral edge. The Sadie Family philosophy in the vineyard is one of minimal intervention and respect for old vines, with meticulous, largely manual work and modest yields to concentrate flavour. Harvest is carried out by hand, with strict selection of bunches to ensure optimal ripeness and health. In the cellar, Eben Sadie favours gentle, traditional vinification: fermentation with indigenous yeasts, careful extraction through light punch-downs, and maturation in seasoned wooden vessels to frame, rather than dominate, the fruit. The result is a wine that speaks clearly of its Swartland origin and the Tinta Barocca variety, unmasked by heavy oak or manipulation.
Food & Serving
The firm tannic backbone and savoury depth of 2023 Treinspoor make it a superb partner for richly flavoured, protein-driven dishes. Think slow-braised lamb shank with rosemary, grilled ribeye, game birds with wild mushrooms, or rustic meat ragù over fresh pasta. It also works beautifully with charcuterie, hard aged cheeses, and dishes featuring earthy components like root vegetables and lentils. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and structure. For optimal enjoyment in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften; older bottles will require a gentler, shorter decant to preserve their more evolved nuances.
Producer
The Sadie Family Wines estate, founded by Eben Sadie in the early 2000s, has been instrumental in redefining the image of South African wine on the world stage. From a base in Swartland, Eben sought out forgotten, often neglected old vineyards, recognising their potential long before the region became fashionable. His flagship blends Columella and Palladius helped put Swartland on the international map, demonstrating that this dry, rugged landscape could yield wines of extraordinary finesse and longevity. Over the years, Sadie Family has become a benchmark producer for terroir-driven, low-intervention wines in South Africa, with the Old Vine Series—of which Treinspoor is a key bottling—celebrated for preserving historic vineyards and expressing their unique character. Consistently lauded by critics and collectors alike, the winery is now regarded as one of the most important and visionary in the Cape winelands.
