Description
The 2023 Sadie Family Pofadder is one of South Africa’s benchmark expressions of Cinsault, crafted by Eben Sadie, the winemaker who helped put Swartland firmly on the world wine map. Sourced from old vines rooted in slate-rich soils on Riebeek Mountain, this red wine delivers remarkable purity, finesse and depth. Named after the venomous puff adder, Pofadder demonstrates just how serious, ageworthy and finely structured Cinsault can be when handled with care and precision.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Pofadder shows a luminous, translucent ruby hue, hinting at both delicacy and concentration. The nose is beautifully lifted and focused, with pristine red fruit—think wild strawberries, red cherries and pomegranate—interlaced with gentle notes of dried rose petals, soft oriental spices and an earthy, slate-driven minerality. Subtle hints of tea leaf and dried herbs emerge with air, suggesting complexity that will only build over time.
On the palate, the wine is finely etched and linear, with red fruit at its core supported by those same earthy, mineral undertones from the vineyard’s slate soils. The texture is silky yet firm, delivering a more serious, structured style of Cinsault: particularly supple tannins frame the fruit without ever dominating, and the acidity is softer than racy but beautifully integrated, giving the wine poise rather than sharpness. Already harmonious in youth, the 2023 Pofadder is expected to evolve gracefully over a notably long drinking window, gaining depth, spice and savory nuance with 8–15 years of careful cellaring.
Production
The grapes for Pofadder come from a carefully selected Cinsault vineyard on the slopes of the Riebeek Mountain in Swartland, where old vines dig deep into slate-rich soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. Harvest is done by hand, followed by a strict sorting to remove any under- or overripe berries to ensure absolute purity of fruit. The intact bunches are then fermented as whole clusters in an open wooden fermenter, with the cap punched down by hand twice daily to extract color, aroma and fine tannin as gently as possible. After about a month on skins, the wine is pressed using a traditional basket (kurve) press and then aged for around a year in old oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop texture and complexity without overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This elegant yet structured Cinsault is highly versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with dishes such as herb-roasted chicken, duck breast with cherries, grilled lamb chops, pork tenderloin, or charcuterie and earthy dishes featuring mushrooms or lentils. Slightly chilled, it can also shine alongside richer fish preparations like tuna or salmon. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its delicacy and aromatic detail. In its youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open up and soften, while older bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant to separate any sediment.
Producer
Sadie Family Wines, founded by Eben Sadie in the early 2000s, is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most influential and visionary producers. Based in Swartland, the estate played a pivotal role in redefining the region’s reputation—from a hot, bulk-wine area to a leading source of fine, terroir-driven wines. Sadie’s early flagship blends, Columella (red) and Palladius (white), showcased the potential of old vines and diverse soil types across Swartland, and quickly achieved international acclaim. Today, his single-vineyard wines, including Pofadder, are among the most sought-after expressions of Cape terroir, celebrated for their authenticity, restraint and ageworthiness.
