Description
2023 Quinta do Vale Meão Monte Meão Branco is a fresh, barrel‑fermented white from one of Portugal’s most iconic Douro estates. Crafted from old-vine fruit and traditional Portuguese white varieties, it combines precision, minerality and beautifully integrated oak. As a brand‑new white cuvée from the birthplace of the legendary Barca Velha, Monte Meão Branco offers a modern, elegant expression of the Douro’s historic terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Monte Meão Branco 2023 shows a bright, pale straw colour with subtle green reflections, hinting at its vibrancy and youth. The nose is refined and pure, with lifted aromas of citrus zest, green apple and white stone fruit layered over notes of fresh herbs, delicate florals and a gentle creaminess from barrel aging. Nuances of chalk, wet stone and discreet oak spice (vanilla, toast, a touch of almond) add complexity without overpowering the fruit.
On the palate, the wine is clean, focused and dry, with a rounded, textural mid‑palate that’s kept perfectly in check by a taut, linear acidity. The Arinto brings tension, energy and lemon‑lime brightness, while the Rabigato contributes finesse, structure and subtle richness. Expect flavours of lemon curd, juicy pear and crisp peach, supported by a saline, chalky minerality and very well‑judged oak. The finish is long, fresh and mouthwatering, with that distinctive chalky, savoury edge that invites another sip. Enjoy it now for its precision and freshness, or over the next 4–6 years as the fruit and oak knit even further and more nutty, honeyed nuances emerge.
Production
Monte Meão Branco 2023 is sourced from older vineyards on the Quinta do Vale Meão estate, in the eastern Douro (Douro Superior) near the Spanish border. Here, the combination of schistous soils, marked diurnal temperature swings and the dry, continental climate yields grapes with both concentration and tension. The blend is 70% Arinto and 30% Rabigato, two classic Douro white varieties prized for their acidity, structure and age‑worthy character. Fruit is carefully hand‑harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve natural freshness, then gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, followed by a period of aging on fine lees in the same barrels, allowing the wine to gain texture, complexity and subtle oak integration while retaining a clear, mineral‑driven profile.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile, gastronomic white that pairs beautifully with refined seafood and poultry dishes. Think grilled or baked white fish, octopus, scallops, sushi and sashimi, or richer preparations such as cod in beurre blanc, roasted chicken with herbs, or creamy shellfish risotto. It also works well with soft ripened cheeses and subtly spiced Mediterranean or Portuguese cuisine, like bacalhau dishes and seafood cataplana. Serve well‑chilled but not icy, ideally at 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. A brief splash in a decanter or a large‑bowled white wine glass can help the wine open up, especially in its youth.
Producer
Quinta do Vale Meão is one of Portugal’s most celebrated estates, located in the eastern reaches of the Douro near the Spanish border. The property was purchased in 1877 by the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, and it later became the birthplace of Barca Velha, arguably the most famous and revered Douro wine. Today, the estate is owned and run by her great‑great‑grandson, Francisco Javier de Olazabal, together with his son and winemaker, Xito (Francisco) Olazabal. Since producing their first wine in 1999—immediately acclaimed as Portugal’s best wine of that vintage—Quinta do Vale Meão has stood at the forefront of quality in the Douro. As a founding member of the influential “Douro Boys,” the estate has played a key role in elevating dry Douro wines on the world stage, crafting authentic, terroir‑driven wines from traditional Portuguese varieties that capture the soul and character of the region.
