Description

The 2023 Philippe le Hardi Santenay Blanc from Château de Santenay is a refined white Burgundy that highlights the fresher, more vibrant side of the Côte de Beaune. Crafted from Chardonnay, it balances purity of fruit with subtle oak complexity, offering a precise and food-friendly style. Bearing the historic Philippe le Hardi name, it reflects centuries of Burgundian heritage interpreted through a thoroughly modern, quality-focused lens.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Santenay Blanc shows a pale lemon color with green reflections, signaling its youth and freshness. The nose opens with bright aromas of lemon zest, green apple, and crunchy pear, layered with white flowers, chalky minerality, and a hint of fresh almond and delicate vanilla from careful oak aging. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, lively, and finely textured, with a core of citrus and stone fruit—think ripe lime, pear, and a touch of yellow plum—supported by a precise, saline minerality. Subtle notes of hazelnut, brioche, and creaminess from lees contact round out the edges without weighing the wine down. The finish is long and mouthwatering, driven by fresh acidity and a clean, stony lift. Enjoyable now for its energy and tension, it should develop added complexity over the next 3–7 years, gaining more nuttiness and depth while retaining its structure.

Production
Sourced from vineyards in Santenay at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, this wine benefits from limestone and clay-rich soils that are classic for Chardonnay in Burgundy, providing both tension and finesse. The vines grow in a relatively cool, breezy microclimate that helps preserve acidity and aromatic definition. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to ensure careful selection of bunches and intact fruit on arrival at the cellar. After gentle pressing, the must is fermented primarily in oak barrels—often with a proportion of new oak kept moderate to avoid overpowering the fruit—at controlled temperatures. The wine is then aged on its fine lees, with occasional bâtonnage (lees stirring) to add texture, complexity, and subtle creaminess, before being assembled and bottled to retain freshness and precision.

Food & Serving
The 2023 Philippe le Hardi Santenay Blanc is an excellent partner for refined yet uncomplicated dishes featuring seafood, poultry, and vegetables. Think seared scallops, turbot with beurre blanc, roasted chicken with tarragon, creamy mushroom risotto, or goat cheese and lightly aged cow’s milk cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with sushi, shellfish, and simple dishes featuring seasonal greens or asparagus. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to showcase both its aromatic lift and textural richness. While decanting is not strictly necessary for such a young white Burgundy, a brief 20–30 minutes in a carafe—or simply opening the bottle a little in advance—can help the wine open up and reveal more nuance.

Producer
Château de Santenay, also known under the historic banner of Philippe le Hardi (Philip the Bold), is one of Burgundy’s great architectural and viticultural landmarks. The estate dates back to the Middle Ages and once belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy, placing it at the heart of the region’s long winemaking tradition. Today, it is one of the largest wine-growing properties in Burgundy, with significant holdings across the Côte d’Or and Côte Chalonnaise, and is recognized for its commitment to sustainable and environmentally conscious viticulture. By combining historical heritage with modern precision in the vineyard and cellar, Château de Santenay has earned a strong reputation for producing characterful, terroir-driven wines that faithfully express their origins, including highly regarded Santenay Blancs that showcase the potential of white wines from this southern Côte de Beaune village.
