Description
2023 Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia is the luminous white counterpart to Ornellaia’s famed reds, crafted from coastal Tuscan vineyards overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Inspired by the great whites of Bordeaux yet unmistakably Mediterranean, it delivers a poised balance of ripe fruit, freshness, and understated complexity. This cuvée has, over the years, become one of Tuscany’s benchmark white wines, showcasing how Bolgheri’s maritime climate can produce whites of real character and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Poggio alle Gazze shows a bright, pale straw-yellow hue with green reflections, hinting at its vibrancy and youth. The nose is immediately inviting, with lifted aromas of citrus blossom, Meyer lemon, and ripe grapefruit, intertwined with white peach, fresh pear, and notes of wild herbs from the Tuscan coast. Subtle layers of elderflower, crushed stone, and a delicate touch of vanilla and almond from partial oak aging add depth and sophistication.
On the palate, this wine is sleek and precise, with a lively, saline backbone that frames its generous fruit. Juicy citrus and orchard fruit are supported by a fine, mineral tension and a gently creamy texture from time on the lees. Nuances of fennel, sage, and a discreet spiced note appear on the long, mouthwatering finish. Enjoyable in its youth for its purity and aromatic intensity, the 2023 vintage also has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 5–7 years, gaining additional complexity and softness with bottle age.
Production
Poggio alle Gazze is produced from select vineyards within the Ornellaia estate in Bolgheri, on Tuscany’s coast, where warm days, cool sea breezes, and well-drained, mixed sandy and clay-limestone soils create an ideal setting for aromatic white varieties. The blend is typically based on Sauvignon Blanc, complemented by Mediterranean grapes such as Vermentino and small proportions of other white varieties that add texture and nuance. Grapes are harvested by hand in small crates to preserve integrity, with careful sorting in the cellar. Fermentation takes place partly in stainless steel to retain freshness and precision, and partly in oak barrels of varying sizes to contribute texture and subtle spice. The wine is then aged on its fine lees for several months, with gentle bâtonnage, building mid-palate creaminess while maintaining a clear, mineral-driven profile.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile, gastronomic white that pairs beautifully with refined seafood and Mediterranean dishes. Think crudo or carpaccio of sea bass, grilled langoustines, seared scallops, or simple grilled fish with olive oil, lemon, and fresh herbs. It also works wonderfully with risotti based on shellfish, delicate poultry, vegetable terrines, and soft to semi-soft cheeses such as burrata or fresh goat’s cheese. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow its aromatics to open. In its youth, a brief 20–30 minutes in the fridge after opening or a light splash in a decanter can help the wine express its full bouquet and texture.
