Description

The 2023 Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet Les Champgains 1er Cru is a refined expression of white Burgundy from one of Chassagne’s most respected domaines. Sourced from the esteemed Premier Cru climat of Les Champgains, this Chardonnay combines vibrant energy with the polished texture that has long defined Michel Niellon’s style. The 2023 vintage brings a beautifully pure, terroir-driven character, making it as compelling in its youth as it is promising for future cellaring.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chassagne-Montrachet Les Champgains shows a luminous pale gold color with silvery-green highlights, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose opens with lifted aromas of white flowers, citrus blossom, and fresh lemon zest, followed by layers of ripe pear, white peach, and subtle stone fruit. Delicate notes of crushed chalk, hazelnut, and a discreet touch of fine oak add complexity without ever feeling heavy. On the palate, the wine is precise and focused, with a fine-boned structure wrapped in a creamy, yet tightly controlled texture. Juicy citrus and orchard fruits are supported by a vibrant, saline minerality that carries through to a long, persistent finish. The balance of fruit, acidity, and discreet oak suggests excellent aging potential; while it will offer plenty of pleasure in its first 3–5 years, it should evolve gracefully for 8–12 years from the vintage, gaining additional complexity and nuance over time.

Production
Les Champgains is a well-situated Premier Cru in Chassagne-Montrachet, characterized by limestone-rich soils with clay and stones that naturally limit yields and enhance mineral tension in the wines. The vineyard’s exposure and drainage help the Chardonnay grapes reach optimal ripeness while preserving freshness and aromatic lift. Michel Niellon is known for meticulous work in the vines, with careful, largely manual harvesting timed to capture both ripeness and acidity. In the cellar, traditional Burgundian methods prevail: gentle pressing, fermentation in oak barrels (including a portion of new oak), and élevage on fine lees to build texture and complexity. The result is a wine that speaks clearly of its terroir, marrying purity of fruit with a subtle, integrated oak signature.

Food & Serving
This Chassagne-Montrachet Les Champgains 1er Cru is a natural partner for refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, and roasted chicken with morel mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with richer seafood, elegant poultry dishes, and creamy yet delicately flavored sauces, as well as aged Comté or mild goat cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and mineral drive. For young bottles, a light decant of 20–30 minutes or a few minutes in a large-bowled glass helps the wine unfurl its full complexity.

Producer
Domaine Michel Niellon is one of the benchmark producers of Chassagne-Montrachet, celebrated for crafting classic, terroir-transparent white Burgundies for several decades. Founded in the mid-20th century, the estate has grown gradually and carefully, maintaining a strong family continuity and an unwavering focus on quality. Its holdings span some of the most coveted vineyards in Chassagne, including several top Premier Crus, and the wines are prized for their combination of concentration, elegance, and longevity. Over the years, Michel Niellon has earned a reputation among Burgundy collectors and sommeliers worldwide as a reference point for Chassagne-Montrachet, consistently showcasing the depth and finesse that this village can achieve.
