Description

The 2023 Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées ‘Clos de la Truffière’ is a classic white Burgundy from one of Chassagne’s most revered domaines. Drawn from a walled premier cru parcel renowned for its finesse and minerality, this is a wine that combines intensity with remarkable precision. In 2023, Niellon has crafted a cuvée that is both immediately seductive and clearly built for graceful evolution in bottle.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru shows a pale to medium lemon-gold hue with youthful brightness and a subtle green rim, signalling freshness and energy. The nose is refined and layered, offering notes of white flowers, lemon zest, ripe orchard fruits (pear, apple), and stone fruits, interwoven with crushed stone, a hint of hazelnut, and delicate oak spice. On the palate, the wine is concentrated yet poised, with a fine, chalky structure and a core of citrus and white peach framed by vibrant acidity. Subtle creaminess from élevage adds texture without overpowering the wine’s mineral backbone. Hints of buttered brioche, toasted almond, and saline notes emerge with air, leading to a long, precise finish. While beautifully approachable in its youth after a short time in the glass, this 2023 has the structure to age gracefully for 8–12 years, developing more complexity, nuttiness and honeyed tones with time.

Production
Les Chaumées ‘Clos de la Truffière’ sits high on the slope of Chassagne-Montrachet, on stony, limestone-rich soils with a high proportion of rock and thin topsoil, which naturally limit yields and enhance mineral expression. The parcel’s walled “clos” setting and altitude contribute to tension and freshness in the fruit, even in warmer years like 2023. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting to ensure only the healthiest bunches are used. In the cellar, Michel Niellon follows traditional Burgundian practices: gentle pressing, fermentation in oak barrels (with a judicious proportion of new oak), followed by élevage on fine lees to build texture and complexity. The result is a wine that reflects its premier cru terroir with clarity, while maintaining Niellon’s signature balance between richness and precision.

Food & Serving
This Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru is a superb partner for refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, grilled turbot, scallops in a light cream or beurre blanc sauce, and roasted chicken with morels or truffle accents—an especially fitting nod to the ‘Clos de la Truffière’ name. It also pairs beautifully with rich shellfish, veal in a light jus, or aged, nutty cheeses like Comté and Beaufort. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight both aromatic complexity and texture. Young bottles will benefit from 30–45 minutes in a decanter or a few minutes in a generous Burgundy glass to allow the wine to open and reveal its full spectrum of aromas.

Producer
Domaine Michel Niellon is one of the benchmark producers of Chassagne-Montrachet, known for crafting some of the village’s most classically styled and age-worthy white Burgundies. Founded in the mid-20th century and now run by the next generation, the estate has remained relatively small and hands-on, focusing on meticulous work in the vineyard and restrained, traditional winemaking. Over the decades, Niellon’s wines have earned an international reputation for purity, concentration, and an almost effortless expression of terroir, particularly from their premier and grand cru holdings. The domaine is widely regarded as a reference point for lovers of Chassagne-Montrachet who value both typicity and longevity in their wines.
