Description

The 2023 Mertesdorf Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett from Weingut Maximin Grünhaus is a classic Mosel wine with the kind of effortless charm that makes Kabinett so compelling. Sourced from a VDP.Grosse Lage site and shaped by the estate’s historic monopole holdings, it combines precision, freshness, and a wonderfully fruit-driven style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shows a bright, youthful appearance with a lively, clear colour that hints at its freshness. The nose opens with apple, mirabelle plum, and citrus, layered with delicate herbal and floral nuances that reflect the red Devon slate soils of the Herrenberg. On the palate, it is juicy, vibrant, and beautifully balanced, with gentle sweetness offset by crisp, animating acidity. The texture feels creamy and approachable, while the finish remains fruity, spicy, and long. This is a wine that can be enjoyed now for its immediate appeal, but it also has the structure to develop gracefully over the next several years.

Production
The Herrenberg is one of Maximin Grünhaus’ prized monopole vineyards in the Mosel, known for its red Devon slate terroir, which lends the wines their distinctive spicy, fruit-forward character and elegant minerality. For this Kabinett, the grapes were selectively harvested by hand in several passes to ensure optimal ripeness and balance. Fermentation took place spontaneously with natural yeasts, partly in traditional Fuder casks and partly in stainless steel, preserving both texture and purity. The low must weight contributes to the wine’s classic Kabinett lightness, and the wine was matured without fining to retain its clarity, freshness, and expressive aromatic profile.

Food & Serving
This Kabinett is a versatile food wine, pairing especially well with fish, poultry, and Asian cuisine where its subtle sweetness and bright acidity can complement spice, salt, or delicate sauces. It also works nicely with soft cheeses or fruit-based desserts. Serve chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary.

Producer
Weingut Maximin Grünhaus is one of the Mosel’s most respected estates, with a long history rooted in its exceptional monopole vineyards: Abtsberg, Herrenberg, and Bruderberg. The estate is particularly admired for its site-expressive Rieslings, which have helped define the upper tier of the region’s dry and off-dry styles. Its reputation for precision, authenticity, and vineyard character has made it a benchmark producer in the Mosel.
