Description

Mas Martinet’s 2023 Pesseroles Brisat is a characterful, skin‑contact white from the dramatic slate hillsides of Priorat, crafted by one of the region’s most respected, terroir‑driven producers. Made in the traditional “brisat” style—where white grapes are fermented on their skins—this is a textural, gastronomic wine that bridges the gap between white and orange wine. It highlights the depth and minerality of old Priorat vineyards while offering a thoroughly modern, artisanal expression.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Pesseroles Brisat typically shows a deep straw to light amber hue, with a gentle haze that signals minimal intervention. Aromas are complex and evolving: think dried citrus peel, orange blossom, apricot skin and chamomile, layered with wild Mediterranean herbs, subtle tea notes and a stony, almost smoky minerality. On the palate, this is structured and tactile, with the gentle grip of skin tannins wrapped around flavors of preserved lemon, stone fruit, bitter orange, fennel and almond. The natural acidity from Priorat’s altitude and poor, slatey soils keeps the wine lively and precise, while the finish is long and savory, with hints of salt and fine herbal bitterness. Enjoyable in its youth for its energy and aromatic intensity, it also has the stuffing to develop further complexity over the next 4–6 years, gaining more honeyed, nutty and tea‑like nuances with time in bottle.

Production
Pesseroles Brisat is sourced from Mas Martinet’s Pesseroles vineyards in Priorat, where old vines grow on classic llicorella (decomposed slate) terraces at altitude, exposed to intense sun but moderated by cool nights and Mediterranean breezes. The dry, poor soils naturally limit yields, concentrating flavor and minerality in the fruit. Grapes are hand‑harvested in small crates, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are used. In the cellar, the wine is fermented with the grape skins in the traditional brisat style, using indigenous yeasts and gentle extraction to build texture without harshness. It is then aged on its lees—often in a mix of neutral vessels such as used barrels or concrete—to preserve purity and highlight the vineyard’s character, with minimal fining and filtration before bottling.

Food & Serving
The 2023 Pesseroles Brisat is a fantastic food wine, especially with richly flavored or textural dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or salt‑baked fish, octopus, shellfish stews, and seafood rice, as well as roast chicken, pork belly, or rabbit with Mediterranean herbs. Its gentle tannin and savory edge also make it an excellent match for hard or semi‑hard cheeses, charcuterie, and vegetable‑driven plates like roasted root vegetables, pumpkin, charred cauliflower, or dishes with saffron and turmeric. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to balance freshness and aromatic expression. A short decant of 20–30 minutes is recommended, both to open up the nose and to let the texture relax; don’t be afraid to revisit the wine over a couple of hours as it evolves in the glass.

Producer
Mas Martinet was founded in 1989 by enologist Josep Lluís Pérez and is widely recognized as one of the key pioneers in the modern rebirth of Priorat. At a time when the region was largely forgotten, Mas Martinet—together with a small group of visionary producers—helped show the world the extraordinary potential of Priorat’s old vines and llicorella soils. Today the estate is led by his daughter, Sara Pérez, who has become one of Spain’s most respected winegrowers, known for her sensitive, low‑intervention approach and deep commitment to organic and sustainable viticulture. Mas Martinet’s wines, including Pesseroles Brisat, are benchmarks for terroir‑driven, expressive Priorat, and they consistently receive critical acclaim for their authenticity, elegance, and sense of place.
