Description

The 2023 Le Chiuse Rosso di Montalcino is a vibrant and refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most respected, traditionally minded estates. Crafted from the same vineyards that give life to Le Chiuse’s Brunello, this Rosso offers a more approachable, early-drinking window on truly top-class terroir. It combines the energy and purity of a young wine with the depth and structure that have made Montalcino famous.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Le Chiuse Rosso di Montalcino shines a luminous ruby red with youthful violet reflections at the rim. The nose is immediately evocative of classic Sangiovese: wild cherry, red currant and pomegranate weave together with notes of dried herbs, rose petals and a gentle hint of blood orange zest. Subtle undertones of sweet spice, cedar shavings and a touch of earthiness reveal the wine’s serious pedigree. On the palate, this Rosso is medium-bodied, precise and beautifully balanced. Juicy red cherry and raspberry fruit are framed by lively acidity and fine, chalky tannins that add grip without ever feeling heavy. Hints of savory herbs, tobacco leaf and a faint mineral, almost saline edge carry through to a long, elegant finish. While intended for enjoyment in its youth, this vintage has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 4–6 years, gaining complexity and a more layered bouquet with a little bottle age.

Production
Le Chiuse’s Rosso di Montalcino is sourced from estate vineyards in the cooler, northern sector of Montalcino, an area prized for its elevated sites and stony, galestro-rich soils that naturally limit yields and enhance aromatic finesse. The Sangiovese (Sangiovese Grosso) is organically farmed, with careful canopy management and hand harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it to the cellar. After gentle destemming and crushing, the must undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel or concrete, with regular pump-overs to extract color and fine tannins. The wine then matures in large neutral Slavonian oak casks, allowing it to develop texture and complexity while preserving the vivid fruit and pure expression of the terroir, before being bottled with minimal intervention.

Food & Serving
This Rosso di Montalcino is a versatile companion at the table, pairing beautifully with tomato-based pasta dishes, roast chicken, grilled pork, herbed lamb chops and classic Tuscan fare such as pappardelle al ragù or ribollita. It also works wonderfully with aged pecorino, mushroom risotto or charcuterie boards featuring prosciutto and salumi. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal freshness and aromatic lift. A short decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up its floral and spice notes, especially in its first few years, but it can also be enjoyed immediately after opening for a more primary, fruit-driven experience.

Producer
Le Chiuse is a historic Montalcino estate with deep roots in the region’s viticultural heritage, once part of the famed Biondi-Santi holdings that helped define the style of Brunello as the world knows it today. Located in the cooler northern reaches of the appellation, the estate has built a reputation for classically styled, ageworthy wines that privilege finesse over power. Farming is organic and low-intervention, with a strong emphasis on preserving the authenticity of Sangiovese and the character of each vintage. Le Chiuse’s Brunello and Rosso are regularly cited by critics and collectors for their precision, elegance and consistency, making the estate one of the benchmarks for traditional Montalcino winemaking.
