Description
Le Bois des Ormes 2023 from Hunter McKirdy is a characterful terroir wine from Alsace that combines precision, freshness, and subtle spice. With its mineral drive and elegant structure, it reflects the region’s reputation for wines of clarity and strong sense of place.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw in the glass, the wine opens with a bright, layered nose of yellow apple, pear, citrus zest, and white blossoms, lifted by herbal notes, wet stone, and a delicate spicy edge. On the palate it is juicy yet taut, with lively acidity, fine phenolic grip, and a distinctly saline mineral tension that carries the fruit into a long, dry, finely textured finish.
The 2023 vintage adds ripeness and aromatic depth while keeping the wine balanced and focused. It should age gracefully over the next several years, gaining complexity and a little more nuance while preserving its fresh, precise character.
Production
Sourced from Alsace’s varied soils of limestone, marl, sandstone, and clay, Le Bois des Ormes is shaped by a terroir that naturally brings structure, clarity, and mineral expression. The grapes are harvested by hand, then gently processed and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts to preserve the individuality of the site and vintage. Aging takes place with minimal intervention and extended lees contact, adding texture and depth without sacrificing freshness.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with fish, shellfish, poultry, and veal, as well as vegetable dishes featuring herbs or root vegetables. It is also an excellent match for goat cheese, Comté, and Alsatian specialties such as tarte flambée. Serve well chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a short aeration can help it open up in the glass.
Producer
Hunter McKirdy is associated with a hands-on, artisanal approach that emphasizes low yields, careful vineyard work, and winemaking with minimal intervention. The style is focused on showing origin and vintage as clearly as possible, rather than masking them with heavy cellar influence. While details on the producer’s broader history are limited, the wines are notable for their purity, precision, and strong terroir identity.
