Description

The 2023 Joseph Colin Puligny-Montrachet Le Trézin is a finely etched white Burgundy that captures the high-altitude elegance of this revered village. Sourced from the Le Trézin lieu-dit, perched above the main slope of Puligny-Montrachet, it offers a more chiseled and mineral expression than many of its peers. This cuvée stands out for its vibrant precision, tension, and focus—hallmarks of Joseph Colin’s modern, high-quality approach in one of Burgundy’s most historic Chardonnay terroirs.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Le Trézin is pale lemon with green highlights, suggesting both youth and freshness. The nose opens with lifted aromas of white flowers, lemon zest, and green apple, layered with chalky minerality, crushed oyster shell, and a hint of hazelnut and lightly toasted bread from sensitive oak handling. On the palate, this Puligny-Montrachet is sleek and energetic, with a spine of vivid acidity carrying notes of citrus, pear, and crisp stone fruit. A saline, stony core runs through the wine, giving it a taut, linear profile that gradually fans out into a subtly creamy, finely textured finish. The oak is discreet, framing rather than masking the fruit and terroir. While approachable in its youth for those who enjoy tension and freshness, this wine will benefit from a few years of cellaring; expect it to evolve beautifully over 5–8 years, gaining complexity, nutty nuances, and a deeper, more layered mid-palate.

Production
Le Trézin is a high-lying climat in Puligny-Montrachet, characterized by thinner soils over limestone and a cooler, breezier exposition that naturally emphasizes finesse, cut, and minerality. Vines here draw deeply from the chalky subsoil, which is key to the wine’s saline, linear profile. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to retain acidity and aromatic purity, then carefully sorted to ensure only the healthiest berries make it into the press. Fermentation takes place in French oak, largely used barrels with a modest proportion of new wood, allowing for gentle micro-oxygenation without overwhelming the delicate fruit. The wine is aged on fine lees, often with limited bâtonnage, to build texture and complexity while preserving the crystalline, mineral backbone that defines the site.

Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet shines with refined, subtly rich dishes that echo its elegance and minerality. Think butter-poached or grilled lobster, scallops, turbot, or sole, as well as roast chicken with herbs, veal in a light cream sauce, or delicate mushroom and truffle risottos. It also pairs beautifully with fine goat’s cheese and lightly aged cow’s milk cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to reveal its full aromatic spectrum without muting its freshness. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the young 2023 vintage open up, softening the structure and allowing the floral and nutty nuances to emerge.

Producer
Joseph Colin hails from one of Burgundy’s most respected winemaking families, the Colin clan of Chassagne- and Puligny-Montrachet fame. After working alongside his brother Pierre-Yves in the family domaine, Joseph established his own label, quickly drawing attention for wines that combine precision, tension, and terroir expression with a contemporary touch. Based in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, he focuses on top sites in and around Puligny and Chassagne, crafting Chardonnays that are both crystalline and complex. In just a short time, Joseph Colin has become one of the new-generation benchmarks in the region, with critics and collectors alike seeking out his cuvées for their purity, balance, and ageworthy structure.
