Description
The 2023 Joseph Colin Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc is a refined white Burgundy that captures the tension and elegance of this classic Côte de Beaune village in a fresh, young vintage. Crafted from Chardonnay grown in carefully selected parcels around Chassagne, it offers a poised balance of minerality, citrus brightness and discreet oak. Joseph Colin has quickly become one of the most talked‑about names in the region, building on his family’s deep roots to create wines that are both precise and full of character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chassagne-Montrachet shows a pale lemon color with hints of green at the rim, signaling its youth and vibrancy. The nose is finely etched and aromatic: think lemon zest, white flowers and green apple, layered with notes of crushed stone, hazelnut and a subtle touch of vanilla and toast from judicious oak.
On the palate, the 2023 is focused and energetic, with a core of citrus and orchard fruit—lime, ripe pear and apple—supported by a chiselled acidity. There’s a delicate creaminess to the mid-palate, balanced by saline minerality and a gentle smokiness typical of top Chassagne terroir. The finish is long, pure and mouthwatering, suggesting very good aging potential. While already approachable in its youth, it should develop greater complexity and texture over the next 5–10 years, gaining more nutty and honeyed nuances with bottle age.
Production
The fruit for Joseph Colin’s Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc comes from a range of well-situated village parcels on limestone-rich soils with layers of clay and marl, giving both tension and depth to the wine. The slopes of Chassagne benefit from good drainage, cool nighttime temperatures and ideal sun exposure, which help preserve acidity while allowing full ripeness. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard, with sorting to remove any less-than-perfect clusters. After a gentle pressing, the must is fermented in French oak barrels, a portion of which is new, using native or carefully selected yeasts. The wine then ages on fine lees, with occasional bâtonnage depending on the vintage, to build texture and complexity without overwhelming the natural freshness of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Chassagne-Montrachet is a superb partner for fine seafood and classic French cuisine. Try it with butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, Dover sole meunière or turbot with beurre blanc. It also shines alongside roast chicken with herbs, veal in a light cream sauce, or richer dishes like tagliatelle with truffles and mild, nutty cheeses such as Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve at 10–12°C: cool enough to highlight the wine’s precision, but not so cold that it mutes the aromatics. Decanting is optional but recommended for young bottles—30 minutes in a carafe can help the wine open up and show its full aromatic range.
Producer
Joseph Colin hails from one of Burgundy’s most respected winemaking families, the Colin clan of Chassagne-Montrachet, and is the son of Marc Colin and brother of Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey. After years working in the family domaine, he established his own label, quickly earning attention for his meticulous vineyard work and finely tuned, terroir-driven whites. Based in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, he focuses on expressing individual sites with clarity rather than power, favoring careful hand-harvesting, low yields and precise élevage in barrel. In a short time, Joseph Colin has become a key reference among the new generation of Burgundy producers, with critics and collectors alike seeking out his Chassagne-Montrachet for its purity, balance and ageworthy elegance.
