Description

The 2023 Herdade do Sobroso Reserva Tinto is a polished red from the sun‑drenched plains of Portugal’s Alentejo, crafted to showcase depth, richness and easy drinkability. This Reserva bottling sits a step above the estate’s everyday wines, offering more concentration, structure and finesse while remaining wonderfully approachable in its youth. Drawing on Alentejo’s blend of tradition and modern winemaking, it reflects both the region’s rustic charm and its increasingly refined, contemporary style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Reserva Tinto typically shows a deep ruby to garnet color with a vivid rim, hinting at its youthful intensity. The nose is generous and inviting, with notes that often lean into ripe red and dark fruits—think blackberries, cherries and plums—layered with subtle spice, a touch of dried herbs and a gentle hint of oak-driven vanilla or cocoa from barrel aging. On the palate, expect a full-bodied yet balanced profile, with juicy, ripe fruit at the core supported by smooth tannins and fresh but not aggressive acidity. Flavors of dark berries, red currants and hints of licorice or warm spice are common in Alentejo reservas, often framed by a silky texture and a lingering, slightly savory finish. While the 2023 vintage is crafted to drink well in its first few years, it should comfortably evolve in bottle over the next 3–6 years, gaining complexity and softer tannins with short- to mid-term cellaring.

Production
Herdade do Sobroso lies in the heart of Alentejo, a region known for its rolling hills, hot, dry summers and poor, well‑drained soils—conditions that favor low yields and intensely flavored grapes. The estate vineyards benefit from strong diurnal temperature variation, helping preserve freshness and aromatic complexity in a warm climate. Grapes for the Reserva are typically hand‑selected from the estate’s best parcels, focusing on traditional Alentejo varieties and, in some vintages, small portions of international grapes to enhance structure and aromatic lift. After careful sorting, the fruit is fermented in temperature‑controlled tanks to capture pure, ripe fruit character, followed by maturation in oak barrels to build texture, polish the tannins and add discreet notes of spice and toast without overwhelming the wine’s natural richness.

Food & Serving
The 2023 Herdade do Sobroso Reserva Tinto pairs beautifully with hearty, flavorful dishes—think grilled or roasted red meats, lamb chops, Iberian pork, game birds and rich stews. It also complements mature cheeses, charcuterie and rustic dishes featuring mushrooms or roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both the fruit and the structure. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, softening the tannins and allowing the layered aromas to fully express themselves, especially in the first few years after release.

Producer
Herdade do Sobroso is an estate winery located in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal, an area that has become one of the country’s most dynamic sources of characterful red wines. Founded with a focus on quality estate viticulture, the property integrates vineyards, cork oak forests and unspoiled nature, reflecting the traditional landscape of the region. Over the years, Herdade do Sobroso has earned a reputation for crafting expressive, modern reds that remain firmly rooted in Portuguese identity, often garnering strong critical attention for their combination of ripe fruit, elegance and value. The Reserva line represents the estate’s commitment to showcasing the best of its terroir, emphasizing careful vineyard selection and thoughtful cellar work to deliver wines with both immediate appeal and the capacity to age.
