Description
The 2023 Günther Steinmetz Riesling Mosel Wintricher Geierslay GW is a focused, terroir-driven white wine from one of the Mosel’s most dramatic steep-slope vineyards. Crafted in small quantities, it highlights the tension, mineral depth and precision that have made dry Mosel Riesling so sought after. This bottling represents one of the top selections from Wintricher Geierslay, capturing the essence of the site in an elegant yet powerful style. Its unique selling point lies in its combination of crystalline fruit and intense slate minerality, drawn from old vines rooted deep in the precipitous slopes above the Mosel River. The “GW” designation signals a particularly meticulous selection of fruit from prime parcels, yielding extra concentration and finesse. While the estate itself is comparatively young in reputation, the vineyards of Wintrich and their steep slate terraces have been cultivated for generations, forming part of the historical core of classic Mosel Riesling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Wintricher Geierslay GW shows a pale lemon to light straw color, with bright, silvery reflections that hint at freshness and youth. Swirled in the glass, it clings in fine, delicate legs, suggesting both extract and energy.
The nose opens with precise aromas of white peach, lime zest and green apple, layered with crushed slate, wet stone and a touch of herbal lift—think lemon verbena and wild thyme. With a bit of air, hints of white blossom, grapefruit pith and a faint smokiness emerge, giving it a complex, stony character.
On the palate, this Riesling is taut, dry to bone-dry in style, with a racy, linear acidity that cuts through the juicy stone-fruit core. Flavors of ripe citrus, green pear and peach are wrapped in a pronounced mineral backbone, showing notes of saline, pebble and cool slate. The texture is precise and finely etched rather than broad, with a long, vibrating finish marked by citrus peel, stone and subtle spice. Still very youthful, it will gain further aromatic complexity—petrol nuances, honeyed notes and deeper minerality—over the next several years. With proper cellaring, it should evolve beautifully for 8–12 years, and potentially longer in ideal conditions.
Production
The fruit for this wine comes from the steep, rocky slopes of Wintricher Geierslay in the Mosel, a site characterized by thin, slate-rich soils that force the Riesling vines to root deeply, concentrating flavor and transmitting a strong sense of place. The vineyard’s south to south-west exposure maximizes sunlight in this cool climate, allowing for slow, even ripening and preserving high natural acidity. Harvest is typically carried out by hand—both a necessity on the near-vertical terraces and a quality decision—so that only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it into the cellar. In keeping with Mosel tradition and the producer’s artisanal approach, the grapes are gently pressed and the must is fermented with minimal intervention, often using indigenous yeasts, at controlled cool temperatures to safeguard the delicate aromatics. The wine is then matured on its fine lees, commonly in a mix of stainless steel and traditional large oak or old wood, to build texture and complexity without overshadowing the clarity of fruit and minerality.
Food & Serving
This dry, mineral-driven Mosel Riesling is highly versatile at the table and shines with refined, subtly flavored dishes. It pairs beautifully with shellfish—think oysters, scallops, shrimp, or steamed mussels—as well as delicate white fish, sushi and sashimi, or ceviche where its acidity cuts through richness. It is equally at home alongside lightly spiced Asian cuisine, fresh goat’s cheese, poultry with citrus or herb accents, and vegetable-driven dishes such as asparagus, fennel or seasonal greens. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to allow the aromatics to express themselves without muting the minerality. In its youth, a brief splash-decant or 15–20 minutes in the glass can help the wine open up, while older bottles should be handled gently and decanted only if necessary to separate any sediment.
