Description
The 2023 Günther Steinmetz Riesling Dhroner Grosser Hengelberg Monopollage is a striking expression of steep-slope Mosel Riesling, sourced exclusively from the estate’s own monopole vineyard above the village of Dhron. This is a precision-crafted dry Riesling that captures the tension between ripe fruit, mineral depth and electric acidity. Produced in small quantities, it showcases why Günther Steinmetz has become one of the most talked‑about names in the Mosel.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Dhroner Grosser Hengelberg shows a pale lemon color with greenish highlights, hinting at its youth and vibrancy. The nose is finely etched and expressive, with aromas of lime zest, green apple, white peach and crushed slate, layered with notes of white flowers, herbs and a subtle smoky, flinty edge.
On the palate, this is tightly wound yet already beautifully balanced: brisk citrus and stone-fruit flavors ride on a spine of vivid acidity, with a pronounced salty, rocky minerality that is very typical of steep-slope Mosel sites. The texture is both crystalline and slightly creamy from extended lees contact, leading to a long, focused finish with citrus pith and wet stone. While already enjoyable in its youth after a brief airing, this wine has serious aging potential; expect it to develop more complexity, spice and honeyed nuances over 8–12 years, and potentially longer under good cellaring conditions.
Production
The Dhroner Grosser Hengelberg is a steep, south to south-west facing slope on the Middle Mosel, rooted in weathered slate soils that force the vines deep into the rock and naturally limit yields. This monopole site, farmed exclusively by Weingut Günther Steinmetz, benefits from excellent sun exposure and cool Mosel nights, preserving acidity while achieving full aromatic ripeness. Harvest is done entirely by hand, often in several selective passes to pick only perfectly ripe, healthy Riesling grapes from these challenging, terraced parcels. In the cellar, Steinmetz favors a low‑intervention approach: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts—often in stainless steel and large traditional oak—followed by extended time on the lees to build texture and complexity without masking the vineyard’s character. The result is a dry Riesling that clearly reflects its slate-driven terroir.
Food & Serving
This Riesling’s tension and minerality make it a versatile partner at the table. It shines with delicately spiced Asian dishes (such as sashimi, lightly spiced sushi, Thai salads or Vietnamese spring rolls), as well as classic European fare like grilled trout, shellfish, ceviche, steamed mussels or simple preparations of white asparagus. It also pairs beautifully with fresh goat cheese, young hard cheeses and vegetable-focused dishes featuring fennel, leeks or green herbs. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F). A brief decant of 15–30 minutes in its youth can help the wine open up aromatically and soften its initial firmness; as it ages, a gentle splash-decant just before serving is sufficient.
