Description

The 2023 Günther Steinmetz Riesling Brauneberger Juffer GB captures the steep-slope magic of the Mosel in a finely etched, mineral-driven white. Sourced from the famed Brauneberger Juffer vineyard, this Riesling combines precision, depth and sheer drinkability in a way that few regions outside Germany can match. It’s a compelling choice for those who love expressive, terroir-focused wines with both energy and finesse. The “GB” bottling highlights select parcels and careful cellar work, resulting in extra concentration and complexity compared to an estate-level Riesling. Brauneberger Juffer has been celebrated for centuries for its blue-slate soils and sun-drenched, south-facing slopes, and this 2023 vintage continues that long tradition with a beautifully poised and age-worthy wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale lemon color with green reflections, hinting at its youth and vibrant acidity. The nose is detailed and pure: white peach, green apple and ripe citrus peel layered with white flowers, wet stone, and a whisper of smokiness typical of steep Mosel slate. Hints of lime zest and crushed herbs add lift and precision. On the palate, this Riesling is sleek, incisive and finely textured, with a crystalline core of citrus and stone fruit framed by pronounced slatey minerality. Expect flavors of lime, grapefruit, crunchy pear and peach, with subtle notes of salty stone and a gentle, balanced touch of residual sweetness (typical of top Mosel Riesling) that is quickly pulled into line by bright, mouthwatering acidity. The finish is long, clean and mineral, with a lingering impression of citrus oil and stone. Enjoyable now for its youthful vibrancy, it has excellent aging potential; over 5–10 years, it should gain more complexity, with honeyed, smoky and herbal nuances emerging while retaining its spine of freshness.

Production
The Brauneberger Juffer vineyard is one of the Mosel’s most prized steep slopes, characterized by blue and grey slate soils that store heat and lend the wine its signature smoky-mineral drive. Vines cling to the hillside above the Mosel River, benefiting from optimal sun exposure and the river’s moderating influence, which extends the growing season and promotes slow, even ripening. At Günther Steinmetz, the grapes are typically harvested by hand in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is selected. In the cellar, the must is handled gently, often with a combination of spontaneous (wild-yeast) fermentation and extended lees contact to add texture and complexity, while stainless steel and/or large old foudres are used to preserve freshness and highlight the vineyard’s character. The result is an unforced, terroir-driven Riesling that speaks clearly of Brauneberger Juffer.

Food & Serving
This Riesling is exceptionally versatile at the table. It’s a natural match for seafood—think oysters, ceviche, sushi, grilled prawns and steamed mussels—as well as lighter poultry dishes, fresh goat cheese, and vegetable-driven plates like asparagus, artichoke, or herb-infused salads. Its vibrant acidity and subtle sweetness also make it a smart pairing for gently spiced Asian cuisine, such as Thai or Vietnamese dishes with lime, ginger and fresh chili. Serve well-chilled at about 8–10°C (46–50°F). Decanting is not strictly necessary, but giving the wine 15–20 minutes in the glass allows the aromatics to open and the slatey minerality to fully express itself.

Weingut Günther Steinmetz is a highly regarded family estate in the Mosel, known among Riesling lovers for its meticulous work in steep, often dizzyingly sloped vineyards. Based in Brauneberg, the winery has built a strong reputation for authentic, low-intervention wines that transparently reflect their individual sites. Over the years, Steinmetz has become a benchmark producer for traditional Mosel Riesling, often working old vines, hand-harvesting on steep terraces, and favoring spontaneous fermentations.
