Description

The 2023 Gianfranco Fino SE is a richly expressive red from the sun‑drenched Primitivo di Manduria region in Puglia, Italy. Crafted by one of Southern Italy’s most respected small producers, this wine captures the depth, warmth and intensity that have made Manduria a reference point for powerful yet nuanced Primitivo-based reds. It’s a modern classic in the making, designed for wine lovers who appreciate concentration balanced by precision and elegance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 SE shows a deep, almost opaque ruby color with vivid purple hues at the rim, hinting at its youth and vibrancy. The nose is generous and layered, with ripe dark plum, macerated cherry and blackberry compote at the core, supported by notes of sweet spice, licorice, cocoa, Mediterranean herbs and a subtle touch of toasted oak. On the palate, this is a full‑bodied, enveloping red with velvety tannins and a rich, mouthfilling texture. Ripe black fruit and cherry liqueur flavors are lifted by hints of baking spice, dark chocolate and a savory, slightly balsamic edge that keeps the wine from feeling heavy. Despite its power, there is a pleasing freshness that carries through to a long, warming finish. Enjoyable in its youth for its exuberant fruit, it will reward 5–8 years of careful cellaring as the tannins integrate further and the tertiary notes of leather, dried fig and tobacco begin to emerge.

Production
Sourced from selected vineyards in Primitivo di Manduria, the 2023 SE benefits from Puglia’s hot, dry climate, intense Mediterranean sun and cooling coastal breezes, which help preserve freshness in the grapes. The soils here are typically a mix of red clay and limestone, contributing both richness and structure to the wine. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness—often by hand—to ensure careful selection of bunches in the vineyard. In the cellar, Gianfranco Fino is known for attentive, low‑yield winemaking, with gentle extraction to maximize aromatic complexity and texture without harshness. Fermentation takes place under controlled temperatures to preserve the varietal character, followed by maturation in oak to add polish, spice and depth while respecting the natural power of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for hearty, flavor‑packed dishes: slow‑braised lamb shank, oxtail ragu, grilled ribeye, or rich beef stews all work beautifully with its depth and structure. It also pairs wonderfully with aged hard cheeses, game dishes, and robust tomato‑based pastas featuring sausage or wild boar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and spice; if the wine is very young on release, decanting for 45–60 minutes will help the aromatics open and soften the tannins, revealing greater detail and complexity.

Producer
Gianfranco Fino has become one of the benchmark names in Southern Italian wine, particularly for his work in Primitivo di Manduria. Starting with a focus on old vines and meticulous vineyard care, he helped elevate the reputation of Puglian reds from rustic, under‑the‑radar wines to world‑class bottlings that stand alongside Italy’s most prestigious appellations. The estate’s commitment to low yields, careful selection and expressive, terroir‑driven winemaking has earned critical acclaim and a loyal following among collectors. Today, Gianfranco Fino is widely regarded as a key figure in the modern renaissance of Manduria, consistently producing powerful yet refined wines that showcase the true potential of Primitivo and its unique coastal terroir.
