Description

The 2023 Gianfranco Fino Jo Negroamaro Salento is a powerful and refined expression of Puglia’s flagship red grape. Crafted by one of Southern Italy’s most acclaimed artisan producers, this wine captures the sun-drenched intensity of Salento while retaining remarkable balance and freshness. Jo is Gianfranco Fino’s tribute to Negroamaro in its purest, most characterful form, offering both immediate pleasure and the structure to reward a few years of cellaring. What sets Jo apart is its origin in old-vine Negroamaro, cultivated in traditional alberello (bush-trained) vineyards with extremely low yields. This meticulous, quality-driven approach results in a wine of concentration, depth and authenticity that stands out among Salento reds. Since its first vintages, Jo has helped redefine what Negroamaro can be: not just rich and generous, but also elegant, complex and worthy of serious attention.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Jo Negroamaro shows a deep, opaque ruby color with purple reflections at the rim, hinting at both youth and intensity. Swirled in the glass, it clings with slow-forming tears, promising richness and texture. On the nose, Jo opens with dark, sun-ripened blackberries and black cherries, followed by notes of plum compote, dried figs and wild Mediterranean herbs. Hints of licorice, black pepper and cocoa powder emerge with air, alongside subtle balsamic and tobacco nuances from careful oak maturation. The overall impression is both ripe and layered, with a distinct Salento warmth. The palate is full-bodied and enveloping, with dense, velvety fruit at the core: black cherry, blackberry and bramble intermingle with notes of dark chocolate, espresso and sweet spices. A firm, fine-grained tannic structure gives the wine backbone, while fresh acidity keeps it from ever feeling heavy, lifting the finish and making each sip compelling. The finish is long and savory, with lingering notes of black fruit, spice and a gentle, almost saline minerality. While already expressive in its youth, the 2023 vintage has the stuffing to develop additional complexity over the next 5–8 years, softening its tannins and revealing more tertiary notes of leather, tobacco and dried herbs with proper cellaring.

Production
Jo is sourced from old Negroamaro vines rooted in the red, iron-rich soils and underlying limestone of Salento, where constant sea breezes from the Ionian and Adriatic coasts temper the intense southern Italian sun. This combination of heat, light, minerality and maritime influence yields grapes of great concentration yet surprising freshness. Gianfranco Fino works with very low yields and typically harvests by hand, often slightly later than many neighboring producers to achieve optimal ripeness and phenolic maturity. In the cellar, the grapes are carefully sorted and fermented in temperature-controlled conditions to preserve aromatics while extracting color, tannin and flavor in a measured, precise way. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a mix of new and used, depending on the vintage), allowing the structure to integrate and adding subtle notes of spice, cocoa and toast without overwhelming the character of the grape or its terroir.

Food & Serving
This is a generous, gastronomic red that shines with hearty Mediterranean and richly flavored dishes. Think slow-braised lamb shanks with rosemary, grilled ribeye or bistecca alla fiorentina, ragù-based pastas, oxtail, or game dishes such as wild boar stew. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses, pecorino, caciocavallo, and robust, herb-laden vegetable dishes like eggplant parmigiana or baked pasta al forno. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its richness and freshness; avoid serving too warm, which can accentuate alcohol. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in the wine’s youth to allow the bouquet to open and the tannins to soften, particularly if served within the first few years after release.

Producer
Gianfranco Fino is one of Puglia’s modern cult producers, widely credited with elevating the image of the region’s native varieties on the world stage. Founded in the early 2000s with a focus on old-vine Primitivo and Negroamaro, the estate quickly gained recognition for its obsessive attention to vineyard work, ultra-low yields and uncompromising quality standards. Working primarily in the Manduria and broader Salento area, Fino champions traditional bush-trained vineyards and indigenous grapes, proving that this warm southern corner of Italy can produce wines of both power and precision. His labels have earned critical acclaim and high scores from leading international wine critics, helping to redefine Puglia from a source of bulk wine to a destination for serious, terroir-driven reds. Jo Negroamaro is a cornerstone of the range, showcasing the depth, character and ageworthiness that Negroamaro can achieve in the right hands.
