Description
The 2023 Emrich-Schönleber Stromberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs is a crystalline, dry Riesling from one of Germany’s most revered estates. Sourced from the steep Stromberg vineyard, this wine captures the Nahe’s signature tension between ripe fruit and razor-sharp minerality. As a Grosses Gewächs (GG), it represents the top dry wine classification from a Grosse Lage vineyard, built both for immediate pleasure and long-term cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Stromberg Riesling GG shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with bright, silvery reflections that hint at its youthful energy. The nose is precise and focused: lime zest, white peach and green apple are layered with white flowers, crushed slate, smoky flint and a whisper of wild herbs.
On the palate, this is taut, dry and deeply mineral, with an almost electric acidity that frames pure citrus and stone-fruit flavors. Notes of lime, grapefruit pith, nectarine and green plum are underscored by saline, stony nuances and a gentle smokiness from the volcanic soils. The finish is long, linear and mouthwatering, promising excellent aging potential. While already impressive in its youth, this wine will gain complexity and harmony over 8–15 years in the cellar, developing more savory, honeyed and herbal notes with time.
Production
The Stromberg vineyard is one of Emrich-Schönleber’s most prized sites, a steep, well-exposed slope rooted predominantly in volcanic porphyry with elements of weathered rock and stone. This poor, mineral-rich terroir naturally limits yields, concentrating flavor and imparting a distinct, smoky minerality to the Riesling. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in small crates at optimal ripeness to ensure meticulous selection and preserve freshness. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented with a focus on preserving purity and precision—often in a mix of stainless steel and traditional large oak casks—at controlled temperatures. Extended lees contact adds texture and depth without masking the wine’s inherent tension and clarity, culminating in a dry Grosses Gewächs that is both powerful and finely etched.
Food & Serving
This Riesling Grosses Gewächs is a superb partner for refined cuisine, particularly dishes that echo its freshness and minerality. Think oysters, scallop crudo, ceviche or sashimi, as well as grilled or poached white fish, shellfish, and lightly spiced Asian dishes. It also pairs beautifully with poultry in citrus or herb-based sauces and with vegetable-focused plates like asparagus, fennel, or artichoke risotto. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics to fully unfold. Young bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to soften the structure and reveal additional layers of fruit and spice.
Producer
Emrich-Schönleber is one of the benchmark producers of the Nahe region and widely regarded as one of Germany’s elite Riesling estates. Family-run for generations, the winery has gradually assembled an outstanding collection of steep, rocky vineyards, including famed sites such as Halenberg and Stromberg. Their meticulous work in the vines and restrained, terroir-driven approach in the cellar have earned them top ratings from leading critics and guides, helping to elevate the Nahe’s reputation on the world stage. Emrich-Schönleber’s Grosses Gewächs bottlings, such as this Stromberg, are considered reference points for dry German Riesling, prized for their clarity, longevity and unmistakable sense of place.
