Description
The 2023 Emrich-Schönleber Frühlingsplätzchen Grosses Gewächs is a precise, mineral-driven dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most admired estates. Sourced from the steep, south-facing Frühlingsplätzchen vineyard, this Grosses Gewächs (Germany’s equivalent of a Grand Cru) captures the elegance and energy that have made Emrich-Schönleber a reference point for serious Riesling lovers. The 2023 vintage combines crystalline purity with impressive depth, promising both immediate pleasure and long-term complexity in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with green highlights, reflecting its youth and freshness. The nose is vibrant and detailed: think white peach, lime zest, and crisp green apple layered with spring blossom, wet stone, and a subtle herbal lift—chervil and lemon balm—over a delicate smoky, flinty edge.
On the palate, the 2023 Frühlingsplätzchen Grosses Gewächs is taut and finely etched, with a laser-like line of acidity that carries citrus and stone-fruit flavors across the tongue. Juicy grapefruit, ripe pear, and apricot interplay with salinity and a chalky, red-slate minerality that lingers on the long, precise finish. The wine is dry, focused and beautifully balanced rather than opulent, with an almost weightless intensity. Still very youthful, it will benefit from a few years of bottle age and has excellent aging potential—easily 10–15 years, and longer in good cellaring conditions, as the fruit deepens and the mineral tones become even more complex.
Production
The Frühlingsplätzchen vineyard is one of Emrich-Schönleber’s crown jewels, planted predominantly to Riesling on steep, south-facing slopes in the Nahe. Here, red slate and weathered sandstone soils, combined with excellent drainage and strong diurnal temperature shifts, give the wines their lifted aromatics and signature, finely etched minerality. The grapes for this Grosses Gewächs are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness in small parcels, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table to ensure only pristine fruit is used. In the cellar, Emrich-Schönleber works with a gentle, low-intervention philosophy: careful pressing, slow, temperature-controlled fermentation—often with native yeasts—followed by élevage in stainless steel and large, neutral wooden casks. This approach preserves purity, precision and terroir expression, allowing the character of Frühlingsplätzchen to shine through without overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This dry, finely structured Riesling is a superb match for refined, subtly aromatic cuisine. Pair it with delicately prepared seafood—such as poached or grilled turbot, sea bass, or scallops—as well as sushi and sashimi, where its acidity and minerality highlight the sweetness of the fish. It also works beautifully with poultry in light citrus or herb sauces, veal schnitzel, or vegetable-based dishes like asparagus, fennel, artichoke, or goat cheese salads. For more adventurous pairings, try it with lightly spiced Asian dishes (ginger, lemongrass, coriander) rather than heavy chili heat. Serve at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to showcase its precision and aromatic detail. In its youth, a brief 30–60 minutes in a decanter can help the wine open up, while older bottles are best handled gently and decanted only if necessary to separate sediment.
Producer
Emrich-Schönleber is a family-run estate based in Monzingen on the Nahe, and is widely regarded as one of Germany’s leading Riesling producers. Over the past several decades, the Schönleber family has painstakingly developed and refined their holdings in top sites such as Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen, elevating the estate to elite status within the VDP (Germany’s association of top wineries). Their philosophy combines meticulous work in the vineyard—low yields, intensive canopy management, and hand harvesting—with a sensitive, minimalist approach in the cellar to capture the nuance of each parcel. Emrich-Schönleber’s Grosses Gewächs bottlings are regularly cited among the finest dry Rieslings in Germany, frequently earning top scores from international critics and cementing the estate’s reputation as a benchmark for precision, terroir-driven wines from the Nahe.
