Description
The 2023 Emrich-Schönleber Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Germany’s most revered estates. Sourced from the steep, rocky Felsenberg vineyard, this Grosses Gewächs (“great growth”) captures the precision, minerality and tension that have made Nahe Rieslings so sought after by collectors and sommeliers. It’s a wine that combines impressive depth with a finely etched elegance, promising both immediate pleasure and long-term complexity in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Felsenberg Riesling GG presents a pale straw to light lemon hue with green reflections, signaling freshness and youth. The nose is vivid and intense: think lime zest, white peach and crunchy green apple layered over flinty smoke, wet stone and hints of wild herbs and white flowers. Subtle nuances of grapefruit peel and a touch of salty sea breeze add complexity and allure.
On the palate, this is tightly focused and dry, with a racy, finely woven acidity that drives the wine’s long, linear finish. Juicy stone fruit, citrus and green orchard fruit are wrapped around a firm mineral core, giving the wine a cool, chiselled profile. The texture is both refined and energetic, with a slight phenolic grip that adds structure without heaviness. While already impressive in its youth, this Grosses Gewächs is built to age: expect it to develop greater depth, honeyed nuances and more pronounced smokiness over 10–15 years and beyond, under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
The Felsenberg vineyard is one of Emrich-Schönleber’s star sites, a steep, stony slope in the Nahe region underpinned by volcanic and weathered rock soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The extreme incline and rocky terrain ensure excellent drainage and optimal sun exposure, while cool nights preserve the grapes’ vibrant acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in multiple passes (selective picking) to ensure only optimally ripe and healthy Riesling berries make it into the Grosses Gewächs. In the cellar, Emrich-Schönleber follows a philosophy of gentle, minimalist intervention: careful pressing, slow, temperature-controlled fermentation—often in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak—plus extended time on fine lees to enhance texture and complexity, while keeping the wine’s purity, precision and terroir expression front and center.
Food & Serving
This is a superb food wine, especially with refined, delicately prepared dishes. Pair it with seafood such as oysters, scallops, poached or grilled white fish, sushi and sashimi, or with poultry in light, citrus- or herb-based sauces. It also shines alongside elegant vegetable dishes, asparagus, fresh goat cheese, soft cheeses with bloomy rinds and modern Asian-inspired cuisine with gentle spice and aromatic herbs. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C, to allow the aromatics and texture to unfold. Young bottles benefit from a brief decant of 30–60 minutes, especially in the first few years after release, to open up the nose and soften the wine’s youthful tension.
Producer
Emrich-Schönleber is widely regarded as one of the elite producers of dry Riesling in Germany, based in Monzingen in the Nahe. Over the past few decades, the family estate has steadily risen to the very top of the region, earning top scores and critical acclaim for its precise, mineral-driven wines from grand cru sites such as Halenberg and Felsenberg. Their meticulous work in the vineyards—favoring low yields, hand harvesting and careful, sustainable practices—combined with a restrained, terroir-focused approach in the cellar, has made Emrich-Schönleber a reference point for serious Riesling collectors. Today, their Grosses Gewächs bottlings are considered some of the most expressive and age-worthy dry Rieslings in Germany, showcasing the Nahe’s unique combination of power, finesse and stony elegance.
