Description

The 2023 Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Les Treilles du Loup BIO is a beautifully expressive white wine from one of Alsace’s most revered estates. Crafted from organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards, it captures the exotic, perfumed character of Gewurztraminer while remaining poised and refreshingly drinkable. This cuvée offers the signature Weinbach elegance: intense aromatics, fine texture, and impeccable balance. Les Treilles du Loup stands out for its purity of fruit and its precise, dry-to-off-dry style, making it a remarkably versatile Gewurztraminer. Domaine Weinbach, founded in 1612 at the foot of the majestic Schlossberg hill, has long been a benchmark for top-quality Alsace wines. Today, the Faller family continues that legacy, crafting wines that faithfully reflect the history and terroir of this iconic region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Les Treilles du Loup shows a radiant pale gold hue with glints of green, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose is intensely aromatic yet refined, offering layers of rose petal, lychee, ripe white peach, and exotic spices such as ginger and cardamom, lifted by hints of citrus zest and a light, floral musk. Subtle notes of fresh herbs and wet stone add an elegant, mineral undertone. On the palate, this Gewurztraminer is generous and silky, with a supple texture that carries its perfumed fruit effortlessly. Flavors of lychee, jasmine, and ripe pear are framed by delicate spice and a touch of honeyed richness, balanced by a clean, precise acidity that keeps the wine lively rather than heavy. The finish is long and fragrant, with lingering floral and citrus notes. Enjoyable in its youth for its vibrant aromatics, it also has the potential to evolve over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity, a deeper spice profile, and subtle notes of dried flowers and candied fruit.

Production
Les Treilles du Loup is sourced from estate vineyards in Alsace, where Domaine Weinbach’s vines grow on well-drained, predominantly granitic and gravelly soils that contribute finesse, aromatic lift, and a subtle mineral spine to the wines. The domaine has been farmed organically and biodynamically for many years, with meticulous attention to soil health and biodiversity; vineyard work is largely done by hand, including careful green harvesting and selective picking at optimal ripeness. After a gentle pressing of whole clusters, the must is allowed a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation—typically with indigenous yeasts—in large, traditional old oak foudres, preserving varietal character and terroir expression. The wine rests on fine lees until bottling, enhancing texture and aromatic complexity while avoiding overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This Gewurztraminer is a superb match for aromatic and mildly spicy cuisine, making it ideal with Thai or Vietnamese dishes, lightly spiced curries, and ginger- or lemongrass-accented seafood. It pairs beautifully with rich pâtés, foie gras, roasted poultry with fruit-based sauces, and soft, washed-rind cheeses such as Munster or Epoisses, as well as blue cheeses where the wine’s aromatics and gentle sweetness provide balance. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight both freshness and perfume. A brief 15–30 minutes in a decanter or simply opening the bottle a little ahead of serving can help the aromatics unfurl, especially in the first few years after release.

Producer
Domaine Weinbach is one of Alsace’s most celebrated and historic estates, founded in 1612 near Kaysersberg and named after the small stream (the “Wine Brook”) that flows through the property. The Faller family has shaped the domaine’s modern identity, elevating it to reference status for the region through an unyielding commitment to quality, meticulous vineyard work, and an early embrace of organic and biodynamic farming. With prime holdings on some of Alsace’s finest terroirs, including the famed Schlossberg hillside, Domaine Weinbach is renowned for crafting distinctive, terroir-driven expressions of Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and other Alsatian varieties. Their wines are consistently praised by critics and collectors worldwide for their purity, precision, and age-worthiness, making the domaine a benchmark not only in Alsace, but in the wider world of fine white wine.
