Description
The 2023 Domaine Michelot Meursault Premier Cru Charmes is a classic expression of top-tier white Burgundy, capturing the generous, silky character that has made Charmes one of Meursault’s most coveted premiers crus. Sourced from superbly placed parcels in this renowned vineyard, it combines richness and precision in a way that’s immediately seductive yet built for refinement over time. This cuvée showcases Michelot’s long-standing expertise in Meursault, reflecting both the energy of the 2023 vintage and the domaine’s traditional, terroir-driven style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Meursault Charmes is pale gold with youthful green reflections, hinting at both freshness and depth to come. The nose is expressive yet fine, offering layers of ripe lemon, white peach and pear, woven with notes of acacia blossom, almond, and a touch of hazelnut, framed by subtle vanilla, fresh butter and a light chalky minerality.
On the palate, it is generous and creamy without feeling heavy, showing the trademark Meursault texture alongside a lively, mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of citrus oil, stone fruit and crisp apple are joined by brioche, toasted nuts, and a saline, stony edge that stretches into a long, refined finish. While already approachable for those who enjoy youthful, vibrant white Burgundy, this wine has the structure and concentration to evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining additional complexity, nuttiness and depth with careful cellaring.
Production
Domaine Michelot’s Meursault Charmes comes from premier cru parcels rooted in classic Côte de Beaune limestone and clay, with excellent sun exposure that encourages ripeness while retaining bright acidity. The fruit is typically harvested by hand at optimal maturity, allowing for strict selection of only the healthiest, most balanced Chardonnay grapes. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and the must is fermented in oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit. Aging on fine lees with periodic bâtonnage enhances the wine’s creamy mid-palate and signature Meursault richness, while controlled use of oak and careful élevage preserve its tension, minerality and precision.
Food & Serving
This Meursault Premier Cru Charmes is superb alongside fine seafood and white meat dishes—think lobster with butter sauce, seared scallops, turbot or sole, roast chicken with morel cream, or veal in a light jus. It also pairs beautifully with rich, buttery sauces, mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F); slightly cooler if you prefer to emphasize its freshness, a touch warmer for maximum aromatic expression. Decanting for 30–45 minutes in its youth can help the wine open up and reveal more of its layered bouquet and texture.
