Description
The 2023 Domaine Matrot Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru is a refined white Burgundy that marries Meursault’s signature generosity with the lift and finesse of the Blagny hillside. Perched at the border between Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, this premier cru delivers a precise, mineral-driven expression of Chardonnay wrapped in subtle, elegant richness. It’s a quietly serious wine for those who appreciate Burgundy with both depth and tension.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru shows a pale to medium lemon color with green reflections, hinting at its youth and vibrancy. The nose opens with citrus blossom, lemon zest and crisp green apple, followed by white peach, pear and a touch of fresh hazelnut. With a little air, notes of wet stone, chalk, buttered brioche and a discreet whisper of oak emerge, adding dimension without overwhelming the fruit.
On the palate, the wine is precise and focused, with a bright, linear acidity that carries flavors of lemon curd, ripe orchard fruits and a fine saline edge. The mid-palate gains weight and creaminess with time in the glass, revealing layers of almonds, light toast and a chalky, almost smoky minerality typical of the Blagny slopes. The finish is long, pure and mouthwatering, promising further complexity with a few years of cellaring. While approachable in its youth for those who enjoy tension and freshness, this 2023 has the structure to evolve gracefully over 7–12 years, developing more nutty and honeyed nuances.
Production
Sourced from premier cru parcels in Meursault-Blagny, this wine comes from higher-altitude, stony limestone-clay slopes that naturally give a cooler, more mineral style than the lower-lying Meursault climats. The vines are farmed with great attention to soil health and balance, with careful, mostly manual work in the vineyard and hand harvesting at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity and aromatic clarity. In the cellar, the Chardonnay grapes are gently pressed and fermented in oak, with a judicious proportion of new barrels to add texture and complexity without masking the terroir. The wine then matures on its lees, with minimal intervention, allowing it to gain depth and creaminess while retaining the tension and cut that define Meursault-Blagny.
Food & Serving
This Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru is a natural partner for refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, roasted chicken with morels, or veal in a light cream sauce. It also pairs beautifully with rich shellfish, mildly aged cheeses (Comté, Gruyère, Beaufort) and elegant vegetable dishes with beurre noisette or truffle accents. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F); a brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or opening the bottle in advance, helps the wine unfurl its aromatics and harmonize oak, fruit and minerality.
