Description
The 2023 Domaine Françoise & Denis Clair Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne is a refined white Burgundy that showcases the lifted, mineral-driven side of Puligny. Perched on the upper slopes above the village, La Garenne is known for producing chiseled, aromatically complex Chardonnay with tension and finesse. This cuvée combines the precision of high-altitude terroir with the elegance and depth that have made Puligny-Montrachet one of the world’s most revered white wine appellations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 La Garenne presents a pale lemon color with subtle green reflections, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose is focused and pure, opening with citrus blossom, lemon zest, and white peach, followed by notes of green apple, crushed stones, and a delicate touch of almond and hazelnut. With air, more complexity emerges—hints of white flowers, chalk, and a faint whisper of fine oak spice.
On the palate, this wine is precise, linear, and finely etched, with a vibrant core of citrus and stone fruit framed by a pronounced saline, mineral backbone. The texture is both silky and taut, with lively acidity giving length and lift to flavors of Meyer lemon, pear, and subtle brioche. Oak is beautifully integrated, supporting rather than dominating, and the finish is long, mouthwatering, and chalk-inflected. While already approachable in its youth for those who enjoy energy and tension, this 1er Cru has the structure to evolve gracefully over 8–12 years, gaining additional complexity, creaminess, and nutty, honeyed nuances with time in bottle.
Production
La Garenne is one of Puligny-Montrachet’s higher-altitude Premier Cru vineyards, with well-draining, stony limestone soils and a cooler exposition that naturally preserves acidity and aromatic finesse. The Chardonnay grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of only the healthiest, ripest bunches, an important factor in preserving purity of fruit and terroir expression. In the cellar, Françoise & Denis Clair favor a classic Burgundian vinification: gentle pressing, slow fermentation—often in oak barrels—and maturation on fine lees to build texture and complexity. A judicious use of French oak (including a limited proportion of new barrels) adds subtle structure and spice without overshadowing the wine’s mineral core, resulting in a Puligny that is both detailed and impeccably balanced.
Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne is a superb match for refined, delicately prepared dishes. Think butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, roast chicken with morels, or veal in a light cream sauce. It also pairs beautifully with fine goat’s cheese, aged Comté, or mild, nutty cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) for optimal expression; slightly cooler for apéritif, a touch warmer at the table. Young bottles benefit from a gentle decant of 20–30 minutes to allow the aromatics to open and the oak to fully integrate, especially in the first few years after release.
Producer
Domaine Françoise & Denis Clair, based in the southern reaches of the Côte de Beaune, has built a discreet but solid reputation for crafting precise, terroir-driven Burgundy from both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Established in the late 1980s, the domaine has gradually expanded its holdings to include choice parcels in prestigious appellations such as Puligny-Montrachet, while maintaining a strong focus on meticulous vineyard work and thoughtful, low-intervention winemaking. Their wines are known for their clarity of fruit, judicious use of oak, and an emphasis on elegance over power—traits that have earned them a loyal following among Burgundy enthusiasts and positioned them as a noteworthy reference in their corner of the Côte d’Or.
