Description
The 2023 Domaine Faiveley Rully Les Villeranges Blanc is a refined white Burgundy that captures the bright, modern side of Côte Chalonnaise Chardonnay. Sourced from the well-situated Les Villeranges climat in Rully, it offers a beautifully balanced expression of ripe fruit, mineral tension and subtle oak. This cuvée showcases Faiveley’s hallmark precision and purity, making it a superb introduction to the house style at a more accessible price than many Côte d’Or whites.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Rully Les Villeranges Blanc shows a pale lemon color with green reflections, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is immediately inviting, with aromas of crisp green apple, lemon zest and white peach intertwined with notes of acacia blossom, chalky minerality and a gentle touch of toasted hazelnut from careful oak aging.
On the palate, this is a lively, medium-bodied Chardonnay with a fine, linear acidity that keeps everything focused and refreshing. Flavors of citrus, pear and stone fruit unfold alongside subtle brioche, almond and a saline, stony edge that lingers on the finish. The texture is both silky and taut, showing good concentration without heaviness. Enjoyable now for its energy and clarity, it will develop additional complexity and roundness over the next 3–6 years, gaining a bit more creaminess and nutty nuance with short-term cellaring.
Production
Les Villeranges is a well-regarded site in Rully, in the northern part of the Côte Chalonnaise, where clay-limestone soils and good slope exposure give Chardonnay both ripe fruit and pronounced mineral structure. Domaine Faiveley farms its parcels with close attention to vine health and yield control, typically harvesting by hand to bring in the grapes at optimal ripeness while preserving acidity. After a careful sorting, the must is gently pressed and fermented, with a portion raised in oak barrels (often with only a modest percentage of new oak) and the rest in stainless steel to preserve freshness. The wine then matures on its fine lees, adding texture and subtle complexity before bottling.
Food & Serving
This Rully Blanc is highly versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with dishes such as grilled or poached white fish, scallops, roast chicken, creamy poultry dishes, and shellfish pastas. It also works well with mild, creamy cheeses like Brie, Camembert or young goat’s cheese, and vegetable dishes featuring mushrooms or leeks. Serve lightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. Decanting is not essential, but a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe or in the glass can help the wine open up, especially in its first few years.
Producer
Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s most respected family-owned domaines, with deep roots and extensive vineyard holdings from the Côte de Nuits down through the Côte de Beaune and into the Côte Chalonnaise. Now led by the latest generation of the Faiveley family, the estate is known for combining traditional Burgundian craftsmanship with modern precision in both vineyard and cellar. Their work in appellations such as Rully has helped shine a spotlight on the quality and character of the Côte Chalonnaise, and Faiveley’s wines are frequently recognized by international critics for their consistency, terroir expression and aging potential.
