Description

The 2023 Domaine Ballot-Millot Meursault 1er Cru Perrières is a precise, chiselled expression of top-tier white Burgundy from one of Meursault’s most revered premier cru vineyards. Sourced from the fabled Perrières climat, this wine marries mineral-driven tension with beautifully layered fruit and subtle oak. It offers a refined, ageworthy profile that will appeal to collectors and serious Chardonnay lovers alike. What sets this cuvée apart is its combination of Meursault’s trademark richness with the almost Puligny-like finesse and stony cut that Perrières is famous for. Domaine Ballot-Millot is widely respected for its restrained, terroir-transparent style, using careful élevage to let the vineyard character shine rather than the barrel. Perrières has long been considered one of the appellation’s most “grand cru–worthy” premier crus, a site that has helped define the reputation of Meursault for centuries.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Meursault Perrières shows a pale to medium lemon-gold hue, with a youthful brightness that hints at its energy and potential. Swirl the glass and you’ll find a complex, tightly coiled nose: citrus zest, green apple, and white peach layered with crushed stone, chalk dust, and a delicate floral edge—think acacia and white blossom. Subtle notes of toasted hazelnut, fresh baguette, and a whisper of vanilla or sweet spice emerge with air, reflecting judicious oak use rather than dominance. On the palate, this is tense and focused, with a fine-boned, linear structure that glides across the tongue. Lively acidity frames flavors of lemon curd, pear, and stone fruits, underpinned by a saline, almost oyster-shell minerality that is the hallmark of Perrières. The mid-palate is concentrated but never heavy, with a silky texture that leads into a long, vibrant finish marked by citrus peel, chalk, and delicately nutty undertones. While already impressive in its youth, the wine is built for evolution: expect its aromatic complexity and tertiary notes (hazelnut, honey, and brioche) to develop beautifully over 8–15 years, and potentially longer in ideal cellaring conditions.

Production
Domaine Ballot-Millot’s Meursault 1er Cru Perrières comes from Chardonnay vines rooted in the stony, limestone-rich soils that give this climat its legendary mineral drive. Perrières sits on a well-exposed, sloping terroir with excellent drainage, concentrating flavors while preserving acidity and freshness. The estate practices careful, sustainable viticulture with meticulous work in the vineyard, including controlled yields and hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness to ensure pristine fruit. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and the must is fermented in oak barrels—typically with a thoughtful but not excessive proportion of new oak—to achieve texture without overshadowing the terroir. Extended élevage on fine lees contributes depth and creaminess, while restrained bâtonnage and a balanced use of sulfur help maintain purity, precision, and ageworthiness.

Food & Serving
This Meursault Perrières is a superb partner for refined, delicately rich cuisine. Classic pairings include butter-poached lobster, scallops in a light beurre blanc, turbot or sole with a creamy lemon sauce, and roasted chicken with morel mushrooms. It also works beautifully with fine shellfish, sushi featuring richer white fish, and aged cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort, or a mild, nutty Gruyère. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its tension and aromatic complexity—too warm and you risk muting the mineral edge. In its youth, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up and reveal its layers; older bottles should be handled more delicately, with minimal aeration to preserve their more evolved nuances.

Producer
Domaine Ballot-Millot is a highly regarded family-run estate based in Meursault, with roots tracing back to the 17th century and its modern form established through the union of the Ballot and Millot families in the late 20th century. Over the last few decades, the domaine has become one of the quiet benchmarks of the village, known for its precise, terroir-driven whites that emphasize freshness, balance, and detail over overt opulence. Working with prime holdings in Meursault and neighboring appellations, the estate has moved steadily toward more sustainable practices and a refined, restrained use of oak, earning a strong following among sommeliers and Burgundy enthusiasts. Their wines, particularly from top sites like Perrières, are now widely recognized as some of the most compelling and ageworthy expressions of modern Meursault.
