Description
Domaine Allimant-Laugner Pinot Gris is a classic, estate-bottled Alsace white that shows just how refined this grape can be when grown on great terroir and handled with care. Made from 100% Pinot Gris (also known as Pinot Grigio, Grauburgunder and others), it marries generous fruit with a polished, almost silky texture. Eight months of sur-lie aging in temperature-controlled stainless steel lends depth and complexity, giving this wine real character as well as solid aging potential. Rooted in family vineyards farmed for over 10 generations, it’s a modern expression of a long Alsatian tradition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Gris typically shows a deeper straw to pale golden color, reflecting the naturally pink-skinned grapes and sur-lie aging. The nose is expressive and generous, with intense aromas of dried apricot, ripe stone fruit, hints of pear, and a subtle floral lift, underpinned by a gentle smokiness and a touch of pastry-like lees character.
On the palate, the wine is rich yet balanced, with a rounded, almost creamy texture supported by refreshing acidity. A light, natural sweetness amplifies the ripe fruit profile—think dried apricot, baked apple and yellow plum—without ever feeling cloying. Mid-palate weight is impressive for Pinot Gris, and the finish is long, clean and marked by delicate smoky and slightly spicy notes. Thanks to its concentration and sur-lie complexity, this vintage has the structure to evolve gracefully for several years in bottle, gaining even more honeyed, nutty nuances with short- to mid-term cellaring.
Production
The fruit for this Pinot Gris comes from the family’s estate vineyards around Orschwiller, in the heart of Alsace near the slopes of the Haut-Koenigsbourg. Here, a mix of well-drained, classic Alsatian soils and a sunny, relatively dry climate allow Pinot Gris to achieve full ripeness while retaining freshness. The domaine works as naturally and sustainably as possible, maintaining biodiversity with alternating ploughed and grassed rows, and carrying out key tasks—pruning, vineyard upkeep and harvesting—by hand for close control of vine balance. In the cellar, grapes are gently pressed using a modern pneumatic press, then fermented with only native yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve purity of fruit. The wine is aged for around eight months sur lie (on the fine lees) in stainless steel, adding texture and complexity while keeping the style precise and vibrant.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Gris is wonderfully versatile at the table. Serve it chilled as an elegant aperitif, or pair it with spicy Asian dishes, aromatic curries, Thai or Vietnamese cuisine, where its ripe fruit and gentle sweetness tame heat and complement complex spices. It also works beautifully with rich pâtés, lightly smoked fish, roast poultry with fruit accents, and soft, bloomy-rind cheeses. Thanks to its fruit intensity and touch of sweetness, it is an excellent match for fruit-based desserts such as apricot tart, baked pears or stone-fruit crumbles. Serve at about 8–10°C (46–50°F); no lengthy decanting is required, though giving the wine a few minutes in the glass will help its smoky and apricot notes open up fully.
Producer
Domaine Allimant-Laugner is the result of two winegrowing families—the Allimants of Saint-Hippolyte and the Laugners of Dieffenthal—whose roots in Alsace viticulture stretch back to the 17th century. The modern estate took shape in 1816, when Captain François-Antoine Allimant, returning from the Napoleonic campaigns, acquired vineyards on the hills of Haut-Koenigsbourg and a 17th-century farmhouse in Orschwiller that still serves as the domaine’s home. While earlier generations farmed mixed crops, a decisive turn toward estate bottling came in 1949 with Charles Allimant, whose work was expanded by his daughter Mariette and her husband René Laugner. Their son Hubert, with his wife Françoise, brought the domaine to wider renown from the 1980s onward, and since 2013 their son Nicolas has continued to refine the style. Today, Domaine Allimant-Laugner is regarded as a benchmark, family-run estate in central Alsace, known for its respectful, environmentally conscious winegrowing and its precise, expressive wines that showcase the region’s authentic terroirs.
