Description

2023 Descendientes de José Palacios Al Chelo is a vibrant, expressive red from the dramatic hillsides of Bierzo in northwestern Spain. Crafted primarily from Mencía, it channels the region’s cool Atlantic influence into a wine that is fragrant, finely etched and incredibly drinkable. Sitting between easygoing everyday Bierzo and the estate’s more serious single-vineyard bottlings, Al Chelo offers a refined yet approachable glimpse into one of Spain’s most exciting regions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Al Chelo shows a bright, translucent ruby hue with violet highlights that hint at its youthful energy. The nose is lifted and perfumed, with notes of wild red berries, sour cherry and pomegranate layered over crushed violets, rose petals and a touch of fresh herbs and graphite. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, silky red with a fine-boned structure. Juicy red fruit—cranberry, raspberry and red currant—takes the lead, framed by subtle spice, a faint mineral edge and very polished, powdery tannins. The acidity is fresh and mouthwatering, giving the wine a lively, almost crunchy feel and making it extremely food-friendly. Enjoyable now for its purity and vibrancy, the 2023 vintage should drink beautifully over the next 4–6 years, gaining a bit more aromatic complexity and softness with short-term cellaring.

Production
Al Chelo is sourced from hillside vineyards in Bierzo, where old vines of predominantly Mencía cling to steep slopes of slate, quartz and clay-influenced soils. This Atlantic-influenced terroir delivers cool nights and moderate days, preserving acidity and aromatics while allowing grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. Grapes are hand-harvested in small boxes to protect the fruit, with careful sorting in the winery to ensure only the best clusters are used. Fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel or large wooden vats with gentle extraction and a proportion of whole clusters to preserve freshness and floral lift. The wine is then aged in neutral large-format oak or used barrels for a relatively short period, polishing the texture without masking the purity of fruit or the signature mineral character of Bierzo.

Food & Serving
This wine’s bright fruit and fine tannins make it notably versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, grilled pork, charcuterie, and dishes featuring earthy elements such as mushrooms or lentils; it also works well with lightly spiced tapas, oven-roasted vegetables, and semi-firm cheeses like Manchego or aged goat’s cheese. Serve slightly cool, at around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to emphasize its freshness and aromatics. Decanting for about 20–30 minutes can help the perfume open up, especially in the first couple of years after release.

Producer
Descendientes de J. Palacios was founded in 1999 by Álvaro Palacios—one of Spain’s most influential winemakers—and his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios, as a tribute to Álvaro’s father, José. Recognizing Bierzo’s potential early on, they championed old-vine Mencía planted on steep, slate-rich hillsides, helping transform the region from an insider’s secret into a benchmark for elegant, Atlantic-influenced Spanish reds. The estate is known for its meticulous, largely organic and biodynamic vineyard work, its respect for historic vineyards and its finely tuned, terroir-driven wines, which have garnered international acclaim and helped redefine what Bierzo can achieve on the world stage.
