Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 The Art of Chardonnay shows a pale straw colour with a luminous green tinge, hinting at its youthful energy and cool-climate origin. The nose opens with lifted aromas of lemon zest, crisp green apple and white nectarine, layered with notes of citrus blossom, wet stone and a delicate touch of toasted brioche and vanilla from judicious oak aging. On the palate, the wine is precise and finely textured, offering a balance of ripe citrus and stone-fruit flavours supported by a firm, saline backbone. Hints of almond cream, subtle spice and flinty minerality add depth, while bright, well-integrated acidity keeps everything taut and refreshing. The finish is long, pure and mouth-watering, suggesting very good aging potential over the next 5–7 years, during which it will gain additional nutty and brioche-like complexity while retaining its core freshness.

Production
Sourced from estate vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, this Chardonnay benefits from cool ocean breezes, clay- and shale-based soils and elevated slopes that slow ripening and preserve natural acidity. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested in the early morning to maintain freshness and sorted meticulously in the cellar. The wine is typically fermented in a combination of French oak barrels and, in part, stainless steel to capture both purity of fruit and layered texture, with a portion undergoing malolactic conversion to soften the acidity. Extended lees contact with gentle bâtonnage builds mid-palate weight and creaminess, while a restrained use of fine-grained oak ensures that the wood frames rather than dominates the wine’s mineral, cool-climate character.

Food & Serving
This Chardonnay is an excellent partner for elegant seafood dishes such as seared scallops, grilled line fish, prawns or sushi, as well as roast chicken, veal in light cream sauces and dishes featuring mushrooms or truffle. It also works beautifully with soft-ripened cheeses like Brie or Camembert. Serve slightly chilled at 10–12°C to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. Decanting for 20–30 minutes, especially in its youth, can help the wine open up and reveal additional layers of stone fruit, brioche and minerality.
