The 2023 Creation Estate Reserve Chardonnay is a single-vineyard white from the cool, ocean-cooled slopes of South Africa’s famed Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Crafted in small quantities, it captures the classic interplay of creamy richness and chiselled freshness that Chardonnay lovers seek. Drawing on Burgundian inspiration but firmly rooted in South African terroir, it’s a benchmark example of modern, site-expressive Chardonnay from the Cape.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Reserve Chardonnay shows a bright, pale gold color with subtle green reflections, hinting at both youth and freshness. The nose opens with lifted aromas of ripe citrus and candied lemon peel, followed by layers of tropical fruit such as pineapple and guava. These are wrapped in notes of fine French oak: vanilla pod, toasted brioche and a gentle nuttiness, all underpinned by a distinct, stony minerality. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied yet finely balanced, with a creamy texture that never feels heavy. Flavors of ripe stone fruit and citrus mingle with hints of butter, brioche and delicate spice from the oak, all carried by a bright, saline acidity that reflects the nearby Atlantic. The finish is long and precise, with the mineral backbone and vibrant acidity promising excellent development in bottle. Enjoyable now for its generous fruit and texture, it should evolve beautifully over the next 5–7 years, gaining more complexity and tertiary nuances.

Production
This wine comes from a single vineyard in Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, an elevated sub-zone of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley just inland from Walker Bay. Here, cool Atlantic breezes and marked diurnal shifts allow the grapes to ripen slowly, preserving natural acidity and aromatic detail. The vines are rooted in Bokkeveld shale-derived clay soils, which retain moisture and naturally limit vigor, contributing to concentration and a distinctive mineral character. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then vinified with a philosophy of “enhancing nature’s beauty” rather than manipulating it. Fermentation relies on wild, indigenous yeasts to better capture the nuances of site, and the wine matures for around ten months in French oak barrels (approximately 40% new). This careful élevage adds texture and complexity while keeping the focus firmly on purity of fruit and terroir.

Creation Estate Reserve Chardonnay is a natural partner for richly flavored yet refined dishes. Think butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, roast chicken with thyme and lemon, or creamy risottos featuring mushrooms or shellfish. It also pairs beautifully with soft-ripened cheeses like Brie or Camembert and subtly spiced poultry or pork. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its freshness while allowing the oak and texture to unfold. Young bottles will benefit from 30–45 minutes in a decanter or a good swirl in large Burgundy-style glasses to fully express the layered aromatics.

Producer
Creation Estate was founded in 2002 by Jean-Claude (JC) and Carolyn Martin in a remote corner of the Walker Bay wine region, at a time when no vines had ever been planted there. Both descendants of established wine families, they recognized the potential of Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge and established what has become one of the area’s leading quality-focused estates. Their philosophy centers on terroir and minimal intervention: meticulous vineyard work, an emphasis on the natural attributes of the site, and the use of wild yeasts to capture authentic regional character. Today, Creation farms around 50 hectares of vines and is widely respected for its refined, cool-climate wines—especially Chardonnay and Pinot Noir—its innovative tasting room experiences, and its contribution to the broader culinary reputation of Overstrand Hermanus, which was recognized in 2019 with UNESCO Creative City status for gastronomy.
