Description

Cloudy Bay Te Koko 2023 is a bold, barrel-fermented expression of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc that reimagines what this grape can be. Crafted from select vineyard parcels in Marlborough, it marries the region’s hallmark purity of fruit with complex, layered winemaking. Te Koko stands out as a pioneering, textural style of Sauvignon Blanc that helped redefine New World white wine when it was first released in the 1990s.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Te Koko shows a pale straw colour with luminous green highlights, hinting at both freshness and intensity. The nose is immediately intriguing and more savoury than a classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc: think ripe citrus, grapefruit zest and white stone fruit interwoven with notes of flint, toasted brioche, subtle vanilla, lemongrass, and a gentle smoky nuance from barrel ferment and lees contact. On the palate, Te Koko is dry, layered and textural rather than purely exuberant. Ripe lemon, lime, white peach and passionfruit are wrapped in creamy, almost waxy weight, balanced by a fine, saline edge and vibrant acidity. Nuances of grilled nuts, spice, and delicate oak add complexity without ever dominating the fruit. The finish is long, precise and savoury, with lingering citrus, mineral and gentle toast. While approachable now, this vintage has the structure to evolve beautifully over 5–8 years, developing more honeyed, nutty and smoky notes with time in bottle.

Production
Te Koko is sourced from Cloudy Bay’s oldest and best-situated Sauvignon Blanc vineyards in Marlborough, particularly in the Rapaura and Renwick subregions, where free-draining alluvial soils over river stones deliver intensity, finesse and a distinctive mineral drive. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, often by hand, to preserve fruit integrity and allow strict selection. After gentle pressing, the juice is fermented predominantly with wild (indigenous) yeasts in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new, to build texture and complexity. Extended lees ageing with regular stirring adds creaminess and depth, while partial malolactic fermentation and careful oak integration create Te Koko’s signature balance between richness, savoury character and vibrant Marlborough freshness.

Food & Serving
Te Koko 2023 is a versatile food wine, particularly well suited to refined, flavourful dishes. It pairs beautifully with fresh seafood such as oysters, scallops, crayfish, and simply grilled white fish, as well as richer preparations like butter-poached lobster, roasted chicken, veal in light cream sauces, or mushroom risotto. It also complements Asian-inspired cuisine featuring ginger, lemongrass, or mild coconut-based sauces. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to showcase its aromas and texture; overly cold temperatures will mute its complexity. Decanting for 20–30 minutes is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full aromatic spectrum.

Producer
Founded in 1985 in Marlborough, Cloudy Bay is one of New Zealand’s most influential wineries and was instrumental in putting the region—and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc—on the world wine map. The estate takes its name from the nearby bay charted by Captain James Cook, and from its earliest vintages it gained international acclaim for its pure, vibrant, and expressive white wines. Te Koko, first released in the mid‑1990s, was one of the first serious barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blancs from the New World, showcasing a more sophisticated, gastronomic side of the grape. Today, Cloudy Bay remains a benchmark producer in Marlborough, recognized for its relentless quality focus and its role in defining the modern style and reputation of New Zealand wines globally.
