Description

The 2023 Cloudy Bay Chardonnay is a modern, finely crafted expression of Marlborough’s cool-climate elegance. Known for its balance of bright fruit and subtle oak, this wine delivers the sophistication of great Chardonnay with the freshness that has made New Zealand world‑renowned. Cloudy Bay was one of the pioneering estates that put Marlborough on the global wine map, and this Chardonnay continues that legacy with remarkable precision and poise.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Cloudy Bay Chardonnay shows a pale straw hue with glints of green, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is vibrant yet refined, offering aromas of white peach, nectarine and citrus zest layered with notes of roasted hazelnut, vanilla bean and a touch of flinty minerality. On the palate, it is medium‑bodied and beautifully textured, combining ripe stone fruit and lemon curd with delicate brioche and lightly toasted oak. A fine, zesty acidity keeps everything in perfect balance, leading to a long, saline‑tinged finish that feels both creamy and precise. Enjoyable now for its energy and purity, the 2023 vintage also has the structure to develop additional complexity over the next 5–7 years, gaining more nutty, honeyed nuances with careful cellaring.

Production
Sourced from select vineyard parcels across Marlborough, this Chardonnay reflects a mix of coastal and inland sites, where cool sea breezes and long, sunny days help grapes ripen slowly while preserving vibrant acidity. Hand‑harvesting allows for careful bunch selection in the vineyard, ensuring only perfectly ripe fruit makes it to the winery. The juice is gently pressed and fermented predominantly in French oak barrels, with a portion undergoing wild yeast fermentation to build complexity and texture. Partial malolactic fermentation softens the acidity just enough while retaining freshness, and the wine is aged on fine lees with regular bâtonnage to enhance mouthfeel and add subtle brioche and nutty notes without overwhelming the fruit purity.

Food & Serving
This Chardonnay is a natural partner for fine, simply prepared seafood—think seared scallops, pan‑fried John Dory, grilled prawns or butter‑poached lobster. It also pairs beautifully with roast chicken, pork tenderloin with herbs, creamy pasta dishes, or mild, nutty cheeses like Comté and Gruyère. Serve chilled but not too cold, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to let the aromatics and texture fully unfold. Decanting is not essential, but a quick 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help the wine open up, especially in its youth.

Producer
Founded in 1985, Cloudy Bay is one of New Zealand’s most iconic wineries and a true pioneer of the Marlborough region. While globally celebrated for defining the benchmark style of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Cloudy Bay has also become highly regarded for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which showcase the region’s potential for world‑class cool‑climate wines. The estate’s commitment to meticulous vineyard management, careful site selection and precise, thoughtful winemaking has earned it a reputation for quality and consistency. Today, Cloudy Bay stands as a reference point for premium New Zealand wine, helping to elevate Marlborough onto the world stage and continuing to push the region’s reputation forward with every new vintage.
