Description

2023 Réserve de la Comtesse is the sophisticated second wine of Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, offering a beautifully accessible expression of this iconic Pauillac estate. Crafted from classic Left Bank Bordeaux varieties, it captures the château’s signature elegance and refinement in a more youthful, approachable style. This cuvée allows you to experience the pedigree of a renowned Second Growth at a gentler price and with earlier drinkability, while still echoing the class and depth of the grand vin.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Réserve de la Comtesse shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose is immediately inviting, with notes of ripe blackcurrants and blackberries intertwined with red cherry, violets, and a gentle graphite edge. Subtle layers of cedar, tobacco leaf, and baking spices hint at its Pauillac origins and careful élevage. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a refined, velvety texture. Juicy dark fruits—cassis, plum and black cherry—are supported by fine-grained tannins and a lively acidity that keeps everything beautifully balanced. Hints of cocoa, pencil shavings, and a touch of savory herb linger on the finish, giving complexity without heaviness. While made to be more approachable in its youth than the grand vin, this 2023 Réserve de la Comtesse still has the structure to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining further nuance and silkiness with time in bottle.

Production
Réserve de la Comtesse comes from the celebrated terroir of Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where deep gravel soils over clay and sand provide ideal drainage and encourage Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen with intensity and finesse, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The vines benefit from the moderating influence of the nearby Gironde estuary, which helps maintain a long, even growing season. Harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel, typically by hand, to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it into the cellar. The grapes are sorted meticulously before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for gentle extraction of color, aroma, and tannin. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a proportion of which are new), where it develops additional texture, aromatic complexity, and the subtle toasted and spicy notes that complement its pure fruit character.

Food & Serving
This refined Pauillac is a natural match for classic dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, entrecôte steak, beef Wellington, or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and hard or semi-hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, a short decant of 45–60 minutes helps open up the aromatics and soften the tannins; as it gains a few years of bottle age, a gentle 30-minute decant will be sufficient to let its more subtle nuances shine.

Producer
Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of the most revered estates in Pauillac, classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Situated just south of Château Latour, the property has long been known for producing wines that combine Pauillac’s power with an unmistakable elegance and charm. Under exacting, quality-focused ownership and investment over recent decades, the château has continually refined its viticulture and winemaking, cementing its status as a benchmark of the appellation. Réserve de la Comtesse, the estate’s second wine, was created to showcase the same meticulous standards and celebrated house style in a more approachable, earlier-drinking form, making the château’s prestigious heritage accessible to a wider circle of Bordeaux lovers.
