Description
2023 Château Mouton Rothschild Aile d'Argent is the prestigious dry white from one of Bordeaux’s most storied First Growth estates. Crafted in very limited quantities, it offers a refined, contemporary expression of Pauillac’s rare white terroir. This cuvée, created in the 1990s, has quickly become a benchmark for Bordeaux blancs, prized for its precision, complexity and age-worthy character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Aile d’Argent shows a pale straw to light gold hue with shimmering green reflections, signaling its freshness and youth. The nose opens with lifted notes of citrus blossom, grapefruit zest and lime leaf, followed by layers of white peach, pear, ripe gooseberry and subtle tropical hints—think passion fruit and kumquat—over nuances of crushed stone, fresh herbs and delicate vanilla spice from oak.
On the palate, this is both vibrant and textured, with a core of juicy citrus and stone fruit framed by a finely etched acidity. Sauvignon Blanc brings tension, energy and aromatic lift, while Sémillon contributes breadth, waxy texture and a gentle honeyed depth; small portions of Muscadelle and/or Sauvignon Gris add floral and exotic top notes. The finish is long, saline and mineral-driven, with notes of lemon curd, fennel, white flowers and a discreet, toasty elegance. While already appealing in its youth, the 2023 vintage has the structure to evolve beautifully for 8–12 years, gaining creaminess, complexity and more pronounced nutty, lanolin and beeswax tones with time in bottle.
Production
Aile d’Argent is sourced from Château Mouton Rothschild’s dedicated white-wine parcels in Pauillac, planted primarily to Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, with smaller percentages of Muscadelle and/or Sauvignon Gris. These vineyards lie on classic Médoc gravel over limestone and clay, providing excellent drainage and a cool mineral backbone that suits aromatic white varieties. The grapes are hand-harvested in small crates, often in several passes to pick only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches. After gentle pressing, the must is clarified and fermented at controlled temperatures, largely in French oak barrels (a proportion new, the rest one or two years old) to balance richness with freshness. The wine is then aged on fine lees with regular bâtonnage during the early months of élevage, building texture and complexity while preserving the wine’s bright, crystalline profile before final blending and bottling at the château.
Food & Serving
The 2023 Aile d’Argent is a versatile food wine, ideal with refined seafood and elegant, subtly sauced dishes. Pair it with oysters, langoustines, scallops in beurre blanc, poached turbot, grilled sea bass, sushi and sashimi, or lobster with citrus butter. It also shines alongside roast chicken with tarragon, veal blanquette, fine goat’s or sheep’s milk cheeses, and vegetable dishes featuring asparagus, fennel or artichokes—foods that can challenge lesser whites. Serve chilled but not too cold, around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the bouquet to fully express itself. Young bottles benefit from 30–45 minutes in a carafe, which helps the aromatic complexity and texture unfold in the glass.
Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild, located in Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, is one of the world’s most illustrious wine estates and a cornerstone of the Médoc. Long owned by the Rothschild family, it was famously elevated in 1973 to First Growth status in the Bordeaux Classification, a historic recognition of its exceptional quality. While best known for its iconic red Grand Vin, Mouton created Aile d’Argent to showcase the château’s potential for great white wine, drawing on the same meticulous attention to detail from vineyard to cellar. Today, Aile d’Argent stands among the most sought-after dry whites of Bordeaux, reinforcing Mouton Rothschild’s reputation as a leader in both tradition and innovation in the region.
